Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Ha ha. Got your Kerouac on and you're gonna hitchhike across the states? Be sure to tuck in your shirts first, fellas.

Actually, yellowcapped dude is saying to rugbyshirted dude, "Dude, I still can't believe you left our stash back at that motel."

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

/\  Tretorns, boot-cuts, plain point-collar, thin black socks, not the best ensemble but shit like that did happen sometimes, and some of the perps were preps .... that's the look of a stoner nerd, the long hair is straight out of Dazed and Confused

reminds me of the serious grinds in the bygone old unloved underground fluorescent bunker library circa 1978

you could sort of tell whether the nerd was also a prep (Tretorns, Sperry, Purcells, Incontinence pants Stan Smith) or not (Converse All-Stars) but in any event those thin black socks would always be sad,

the nerdy preps/preppy nerds, they were there, special respect to the fine lady nerds who took their glasses off and instantly became cute

unstylish anti-style like this should be acknowledged, it wasn't always ocbds, Shetland and Bean sweaters, straight-legged khakis, Top-Siders, and cool sneakers, and this all-wrong (according to the OPH) goofy stuff was worn by people from the fanciest prep schools in the country as well as regular old All-American high schools, contrary to revisionist fantasy, which would redact things like 517s and other disfavored items from the record ......

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

My deep-green and navy-blue chamois shirts arrived. I love these things.

I like stanshall's observations on how all-wrong goofy stuff happened. It was my experience as well in my '70s college days. You aimed for a certain look but back then I don't think I or most kids like me were self-conscious about achieving an entirely "correct" look, Ivy or not. It was all a mix. We mixed Ivy with hippy with disco with punk, or just with stuff our parents bought us.

That said, I even now like mixing my traditional Ivy inclinations with trendier stuff. To wit, I just "pulled the trigger," as the kids say, on a Stutterheim Stockholm raincoat from J. Crew. (I considered a Barbour for fall this year, but I see them everywhere. I may still pick one up eventually, perhaps when my wife and I visit the Brit store in Portland, ME, over Thanksgiving. I like their look but they are so ubiquitous. What, I thought to myself, would look cool and stylish while also having a preppy vibe. Answer: the Stutterheim raincoat. I can't wait to start wearing this.)

P.S. With arrival of the new raincoat, I'll get rid of at least one or two trenches in my closet. We live in a rowhouse townhouse now, and ain't got the room for anything extra. Something comes in, something goes out. Size 42--if you're interested, PM me.

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

By the way, I'd like to see examples of how you wear the chamois shirt, from yourselves. I've shown you how I do mine, over an OCBD. Show me yours.

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Ticking off another box on the checklist, I have some 5-pocket J. Crew cords on the way. These things have fit the bill in the past. Picked khaki and green.

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Same... sometimes unbuttoned over a light flannel shirt if it's very cold... With a puffer vest on top...

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

I find it works best as a wind block..if its cold ill put a lambswool or shet under it..lambswool seems to suit better..and with out that a vest or down jacket on top on top of tshirt and shirt..again depends what were talking and if the wind is cutting..if you got a baselayer sometimes just get away with a tee or lighter weight shirt under it

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

I like the chamois shirt with a t-shirt, also, say you have a scratchy sweater, the chamois is good for making a scratchy ragg or Norwegian sweater bearable ....

also: t-shirt->chamois or overshirt of choice->anorak ...

chamois shirt untucked, long tails barely visible under bottom hem of slightly long (Bean mountain or similar) anorak, mid or narrow straight cords or old stf 501 or 505

then comes the crux of the biscuit: the shoes ... and by shoes I mean sneakers ....

Also a chamois shirt over a rugby...

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Deep in the heart of central California we usually wear our flannel/chamois shirts over a t-shirt, button down, or turtleneck. 9 times out of 10 that's enough. If it's really chilly throw a sweater over or under, or put on some Patagonia

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

I can report that the J. Crew 1040 5-pocket cords fit great. They look and feel much like the Levi's cords I wore in the '70s.
