I dig those Penfield jackets, great quality for the money.

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Looks a bit camp to me.

(The leather ones above, not down jackets in general.)

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

/\  I have liked some of Penfield's designs, but the Western-style leather yoke down jacket is not Late '70s East Coast Prep .... leather yokes and brown down don't fit the Northeastern vibe and color scheme, but green, or blue, or red nylon, or tan poplin, or even orange nylon down jackets and vests were around and they did the trick ....

bearing in mind that many of the hardcore would avoid down jackets to show they weren't cold .... there were other reasons too, including archaism .....

but then again Southern Connecticut is not the very coldest spot in New England ....

the down jacket was something I personally wore when I went foraging for hot food very late on a cold night ...

the more urban the campus, the less down you'd see ...

currently I have a Penfield item bookmarked away, but it's on the overpriced side for something made overseas ... great style but the price is wrong ....

over the years Penfield has been a company I could have bought many things from had they made their stuff here or in Canada .....

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Penfield has recently been acquired by Four Marketing, a company that owns over 30 brands. They intend to drive the company forward in new and exciting directions, or some such. There is no chance that manufacturing will be brought back to the USA for this company. It's now a fashion brand that trades on its short heritage. Check out their website.
Meanwhile a company that does manufacturer in the USA, New Balance are having their products trashed by millennials social media types because of a message on twitter from NB daring to say that Trump may give them more support than Obama?

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

Im with Stan though, paying top whack for arguably inferior products is not the move. I'll grab a secondhand something on ebay made offshore but parting with 300 quid for something put together by people on a dollar a day is bullshit. One of the few comapnies Id like to look at is Patagonia I read about some kind of conscientious operator deal they have signed up to.. hopefully its not just all for the cameras.

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

I agree to a certain degree. That said, my very own Penfield stuff is a Gibson jacket bought in the sales for €66,-- (and they still make profit) and that jacket but it is a NOS jacket that cost lessthan 50% of the original price...

^ I can never see those coats without thinking of the insulating jackets that used to be wrapped around hot water tanks in peoples houses.

Re: The Late 70s Prep Checklist

/\  Bop, I saw those Neu! Balances and I bookmarked them, the colors and style really look throwback even if they're actually modern .... because I'm not sure when the cut-out/insert/overlay/two-tone style of hiking boot appeared ..... did we have anything besides Vasque Sundowners?

... was just a Florida beach bum in King A. Bartlett's court, hadn't become a mountaineer yet, wore canvas tennis shoes and blucher mocs, Bean boots when it poured .......

if you do go for the NBs, which are cool, please let us know how you like them and if you think they're well-made .....
