Re: Is There An Ivy Afterlife?

I have a Makers spread collar shirt so it can't be that blasphemous. The subject has come up before: it does work with kosher ivy kit.

Continental ivy? Continental kit with an ivy influence looks good, but the idea of mixing bonafide ivy with continental doesn't appeal. Nor have I seen it done, but both were widely available in the US back in the day so somebody must have done it (even if they were unaware of what they were doing). The problem is the continental kit in the US was afaik not the real deal and more importantly not as good as the real deal. The ivy kit on the continent wasn't the real deal either but it did look superb.

The only ivy continental crossover I recall is Plein Soleil which contains both, although mostly the latter. I know you're a Talented Mr Ripley fan but Plein Soleil is infinitely better imo, sartorially and artistically. However as I recall Delon wears one or the other but rarely both together.

Re: Is There An Ivy Afterlife?

Well with the tailoring side it's pretty clear to a degree. With casual clothes less so. I suppose it is down to an invidual's view as to what is and isn't..but collectively on here I feel it kind of goes without discussion anymore because we have all kind of explored it a shared it together as well as have been lucky enough to have a few posters experience large parts of the period we look at and give their first hand experience. It's not a rigid walled off area...more like an open prison.

It's got to be before Ivy and and then again after the apocalypse?

I don't know about an afterlife, but I found a place in Nanjing to buy natural shoulder foods:

Yeah finding a working photo hosting site is difficult here. Otherwise just happiness all around. Big thumbs up. Sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your support and understanding.

That creature in the loincloth looks vaguely familiar.

Re: Is There An Ivy Afterlife?

True. Yesterday I thought Hoffman plays Freddie so much better than the lad in Plein Soleil... But the murder scene is much better in the old movie...

Re: Is There An Ivy Afterlife?

Re. spread collars: I have never worn mine and I've had it years. Why? Because I only like it a little. If I wore a suit (sack of course) 5 or more days a week, then I imagine I'd enjoy wearing a spread collar for a day every 2 or 3 weeks. But I don't so it's of no use to me. I got it cheap and it was an experiment so it's not a problem, but I can't imagine I'd ever wear it with tweed and flannels.

Re: Is There An Ivy Afterlife?

I'm not disputing that the tap influence was there - but I think by the 50s the 40s campus/natural shoulder look had the biggest impact on him. It was smart and relaxed, and by giving it an English twist he made it more unique and more elegant. (Too elegant for me to try to pull off but his execution was superb.)
