You wore a tab collar shirt without a tie? Snap tabs just glinting away in the sunshine?
/\ yes Chief, and I'll do it again
'cause I'm loco!
My first (and last) tab collar was the first shirt I ever bought. I was nearly 11 years old and it was 1964. I also got my first long trousers, a pair of grey flannels from the same shop. I was trying to look like my older Mod cousins, or one of the beatles. The occasion was the end of school party and we all performed on stage copying our favourite groups. All the boys wanted to be in the beatles band. I ended up being lead guitar in Freddie and the Dreamers.
Never thought of the tab as Ivy. Too uncomfortable for me to be Ivy.
/\ with you all the way there, RobbieB!
just couldn't pass up a mint Makers for pennies but yeah the tab's constrictiveness is not in keeping with my Ivy
btw everybody there is a dedicated tab collar shirt thread if you're interested
meanwhile Do the Freddie haha!
The tab collar/strides combination did catch the attention of the girls at the party, however. I got to borrow the best electric guitar from one girls dad. I still remember the shame at being chosen for the Freddie band but our lead singer acting as Freddie was a small Jewish boy who looked like Freddie and his performance stole the show. Afterwards the girls ignored the Beatles tribute act and wanted to be around The Dreamers.
I'd also appreciate his comments on the new Brooks shirts under discussion elsewhere.
Probably 'Back to the drawing board, boys...'
Or: don't reinvent the wheel. Particularly when I'm trying to rest in peace.
After careful consideration of the subject I have determined that tab collars are the ivyest of all shirt collars, even more ivy than button downs. It is undoubtedly an urban myth that the button down reigned supreme when 'back in the day' the tab collar was being worn by the paragons of hip and cool.
p.s. .... coincidentally I have two deadstock Brooks tab collar white shirts size 16/33 that I don't really need and would be willing to sell for a reasonable price.
Well I think Jim got his answer. The tail doesnt often wag the dog.
I think Tom hit's on the tab really only looking great with a slim tie, and thereby sitting it in what I see as it's rightful place as just another take it or leave it item of mid-century style.
Fun, isn't it ?
And the Ivy wardrobe of the campus was originally a construct of the clothing industry too. All very circular.

That looks real sharp, but I don't think it's a tab.

I recently saw a picture of a guy in a rounded club button-down collar! Shot was from the '60s I think. It looked really dumb.
