Re: One outfit for the rest of your life...

This thread can accommodate requests, so Worried Man, please wear your flat cap unsnapped and raised to its full height every day for the rest of your life!

Also,  I'm going to answer for Mercer: blucher mocs, ragg socks, jeans, plaid shirt

Brooks olive poplin sack, with a point collar white shirt, a repp stripe, and a beat-up pair of dark brown wingtips. Add cigar, white pocket square and purple socks to taste.

Very funny AC.  Just for that, I have some cuffs and a leather whip with your name on them.  Or would you actually like that sort of punishment?

Re: One outfit for the rest of your life...

Pretty cool thread, mcderm. And difficult. With my life so compartmentalized, it's hard to think of one outfit that would cover everything. However, if I had to come up with something, it would look something like this:

5-pocket thin-wale lightweight cords (like LLB ones I own), in khaki or light blue
A striped surcingle belt
A tweedy glen-plaid sport coat
A v-neck lambswool sweater (coordinated w/ pants color)
An ocbd (probably BB) in white
A pair of Allagash Bison LL Bean oxfords
A pair of matching argyle socks
A blue knit tie kept in the inside coat breast pocket for just in case
A Barbour or similar outerwear jacket
Unlined deerskin gloves
A lightweight Ivy cap of some kind
Eyeglasses & sunglasses (all of this can fit in jacket pockets)

All of this is wearable or carry-able, so I count it all as one outfit.

Does this make sense?

Re: One outfit for the rest of your life...

So I started a new job which requires being relatively smart but often in my own office (living away from home, one bag). I've been wearing either navy cashmere or grey Shetland, various oxford shirts, dark grey flannels or raw denim and brown longwings topped with either navy London fog Harrington or herringbone overcoat every day for the last 6 weeks (changing spare shirts each weekend when I'm in a different city - NW --> SE England).

It's been a fine exercise in realising how versatile the ivy cannon is and how about 2/3rds of my wardrobe is entirely unnecessary (and that living and working in different cities is a terrible idea in the long term).

Re: One outfit for the rest of your life...

/\  interesting post Colin, I can be happy with a white ocbd, flat-front khakis, brown leather C-buckle belt, and blucher moccasins for weeks ....

like the Professor on Gilligan's Island if he could have received one package from L. L . Bean

throw in a pair of blucher mocs, a lambswool v-neck and/or Shetland crewneck sweater, a repp tie, a G9, a blue blazer and one nice tweed sack, and a pair of penny loafers, and a pair of gray wool trousers, one shirt-sleeve ocbd, pair of walk shorts, and and a pair of canvas deck sneakers, and you'd have a great basic checklist

Okay, I'll play the game, with a couple of seasonal allowances (omitting ceremonial occasions):

Mercer blue chambray BD (warm weather), to be replaced by Mercer blue OCBD in cooler weather

Bill's Original Twill flat fronts in M1 fit in either British Khaki or Bourbon (slight preference for the latter)

!2 or 14-ounce tweed jacket, preferably tailored by W.W. Chan

Silk cravat from Beau Ties Ltd.

Allen-Edmonds Wilberts in brown

In the interest of finally giving an honest response here, I'll opt for a crew-neck Shetland (not sure what color), solid blue Mercer Oxford, khaki O'Connell's chinos, cream Wigwam 625s, burgundy E.T. Wright Whippett penny loafers and be done with it.
