Ivy mistakes..The danger of sales and buying trash.

How many Ivy mistakes have you made recently ?
I thought i had reached a stage where i had eradicated impulse buys influenced by sales and big mark downs.

Today i purchased a pair of RL Polo suede longwings with a red brick Dianite sole, i am disgusted with myself
they are shoddily made trash in my opinion...what possessed me ?

What about you lot ?

Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have brought ill fitting, ugly and worn out clothing in a sinful matter...

Re: Ivy mistakes..The danger of sales and buying trash.

I broke my rule and spent a lot of money at Brooks Brothers in Japan and regretted it as soon as I got back to the States. I haven't touched any of it at all; complete waste of money and the worst part is that I knew better at the time. I try not to buy on impulse anymore. I kind of regret those longwing spectators that I recently snagged too, just because I didn't really have the bread for 'em and I really need a pair of cordo ptb's, which is what I was searching for at the time. The Japanese Brooks stuff still hurts though, especially when I think of all the O'Connell's shetlands I could've stocked up on. I can't even dump it for half of what I paid.

I bought a tweed jacket on eBay that seemed like a good idea,  but in person it is loud and the lapels are too big. Luckily it doesn't fit, either, so I can just chalk it up to experience

Re: Ivy mistakes..The danger of sales and buying trash.

My new rule for vintage is to only pick out bargains and err on the side of caution with regards to sizing; I don't pay money for substantial alterations anymore. If it's not a spot on fit, I pass. There's a Campus brand glen plaid tweed sack on Etsy that I'd really like but I'm not paying the demented asking price. There's another '50s Brooks wool tattersall vest that I'd really like, but it's overpriced for the condition and there's some light mothing and a spot on the front, so I won't touch it. I could've opened a department store with all the dumb vtg purchases I've made in my lifetime. I'm trying to slim down my wardrobe to the essentials these days. With the exception of a $10 tartan flat cap which I recently bought on eBay, I haven't made any mistakes in over a year. I can live with the occasional misfire if it only sets me back a couple of sawbucks.

I try to only buy things that are returnable but if I pick up something good for the right price that ends up being too small for me I will gladly give the item to a pal ....

Think you just need to reshape the brim and flip it up in the back.

That's not a stingy brim WM!

Needs shaping up a bit like the Olivator says.

Re: Ivy mistakes..The danger of sales and buying trash.

I regret a suit I bought from a friend as it is really top notch bespoke stuff - but after altering the jacket doesn't fit too well... that guy is built so different than I am - the shoulders (in the back) are a mess. The sleeves also. Tailor isn't responsible, I am. Should have sold the jacket immediately and only kept the waistcoat with the trousers.

I am with Oliver on that... I only buy well fitting stuff from now on and try to avoid any alterations. I was lucky with my Ebay Ivy purchases as those jackets all fit extremely well!

No that's a snap brim fedora/Borsalino (those hats were originally called Borsalino because Borsalino invented them). Stingy brim is a very short brimmed Trilby style hat...

Apparently hat nomenclature is just as bewildering as correct shoe nomenclature.  smile

Yeah, snap brim mate. Stingy is narrow - like an inch.
