Re: Damn It

That's a real shame, to put it mildly.  Talk about one little so-and-so ruining it for the rest of us.  But I can understand why Billax has decided he's had enough of the antics of the online world. With his courtliness, culture and natural style, Billax was always a class act, a cut above.  In the face of some grubby behaviour, he's exited with typical grace. But he'll be badly missed. He's pretty much the platonic ideal of the look, for me at least.

Re: Damn It

Shit happens man. I suspect that someone as appreciated as Billax will continue to post something somewhere - maybe even here.

It is a shame that someone has treated him in such a pathetic manner though.

I read the sad news earlier.  I do hope that Billax continues to post.

Blimey, that's a low blow. Mind you we get it a lot in the creative industries - I too hope he returns, always liked to see Bill in all his finery.

Re: Damn It

If you go to the bottom of his blog entry there's a quote from the respective individual. Now I'm no Agent 00-Soul, but I knew I had read those words somewhere before. You'll see it in the "finding your ivy league look"- thread. (And it's neither Mr. Hall nor McDermott, just so you don't get any doubts before getting to the post)

What was the guy gaining from lifting Billax's work anyway? Strange behaviour indeed

So this chipper culprit is apparently a professional writer and journalism major. But he cannot spell 'discreet'...

Reek of dank underbridges and hairy feet.

But, yeah. What a shame.

Re: Damn It

A true paragon of Ivy style being 'pushed out' by a total cockwomble.
Billax is a rare beast, an Ivy original who blessed this forum with his knowledge and style even with our 'reputation' for being the 'Delta House*' of Ivy/Mid Century Modern on the interwebs.

Re: Damn It

I have to admit that myself and Worried man have known about this situation since Friday.
Billax reached out to WM and explained Chippers identity as Duvel and what had happened on AAAT.

It put us into quite a dilemma . Did we have the right to suspend Chipper from Talk Ivy because of our respect for Bill ?

He hadn't done anything wrong on this forum ...what were we to do ?

We resolved to sit tight and let the situation calm down ,not anticipating that we would be contributing to Billax leaving
the interwebs by our inaction.  Its a very sad day for this thing of ours online.

I appreciate your consideration, Armchaired, and if I am not welcome, then I won't stick around. I don't wish to defend myself publicly, except to suggest there might be two sides to every story (although I am sure my side is plain wrong). As for my misspellings, well, I stand guilty as charged.

Re: Damn It

Weird, I browse AAAC and saw that Duvel had a "Banned" note under his username and was wondering how that happened. He has been a frequent poster on AAAC forums for awhile now and comes off as a sincere fellow, often sharing small asides about his personal life and such. This saga appears odd to me, especially since it is among grown men.

However, it does seem that every so often there is inevitably some dust up like this in online menswear world. I always get a little intrigued when hearing mention of these things, and when I look into them, I can never quite understand what all the fuss is about. I like Billax's content well enough, but I guess I don't understand why someone semi-plagiarizing him makes him want to quit doing something he presumably does for fun?...I mean, I don't think Billax makes money from anything he does online, and this plagiarism would constitute monetary theft?

Re: Damn It

With all due respect to all parties, and with no intention to inflame matters, may I offer that things can be misinterpreted out of context? When I suggested online, as Billax quotes me, that I will "plagiarize" the outfits of others, it was hardly said with ill intention, and in fact, it was used figuratively, to mean the borrowing of a look as a sort of sartorial plagiarism, as the flattery of imitation. And I admit, I do borrow wholesale, even down to socks on my feet, from the many fine examples I see on AAAC, here, and elsewhere. Is there any one of us who doesn't borrow freely from the examples of others?

As for lifting the language, yes, I admit that I may have done that, but frankly, I have no original thoughts of my own on Ivy trad style. I admire Billax's own original thinking, and if I lifted from it, I did not do so with the intention to misrepresent myself or discredit or slight Billax. For the record, I also apologized online at AAAC to Billax and any others I offended, and I also removed the offending posts. I was still banned, and without going into detail, I'd offer the banning had more to do with other ongoing drama.

Re: Damn It

Blatant plagiarizing may well prove the sincerest form of flattery. Was it done intentionally, slyly or at a subconscious level? I didn't follow the fracas on AAAC trad forum, that's why I ask the question.

The first rule of "Gets" Good Enough To Steal is to reword and shuffle and keep shuffling until no one can recognize that you didn't come up with it yourself. It worked for me very well once when I came up with a grandiose statement that Sylvia Plath's limited contribution to literature was writing poems about suicide and then actually doing it.

Re: Damn It

It was done both intentionally and subconsciously. But again, the intentions were not malicious--and I also have a hard time calling this plagiarism. I realize that's not a point I'm going to win, though, and I will cede that point.

If someone here, for example, posts an outfit that I fall in love with, if you will, that person can expect the flattery of my "plagiarizing" that look, the first chance I have. Isn't that why we post these things? I would be flattered as hell if someone posted a WIWT image that looked like what I wear (and I'm sure they would do it better).

In any case, I said I wasn't going to defend myself, and there I go.

^ What other ongoing dramas? I just checked page 1 of Fashion, Trad, and the Interchange and don't see anything.

Re: Damn It

I really don't want to go into it, as it gets into personalities and perceptions, likes and dislikes, etc. I will say that I am extremely opinionated, and I am sure that my opinions and how I expressed myself put many people off.
