My vintage madras jacket is akin to that Palm Beach Acton describes.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

Would make a nice summer shirt, but personally I can't see it as suitable for a jacket.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

If you feel unsure about the pattern, why not order the other two patterns as well and then get a W.I. seamstress to make a patchwork madras out of it? Ok I get my coat.

It'd make a lovely s/s button-down though.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

Yeah that plaid is wide..a short sleeve shirt sounds like a great idea

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

My comments re. it being better for a shirt are related to the thinness of the cloth rather than the plaid itself - isn't the madras in a jacket a little thicker? Or is that just an illusion due to the lining? Except most don't have much lining.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

We talked about it earlier in the thread weights vary but light weight clothes often get lined...

I think Chief is right about the scale of the repeat its going to look very go to hell late 70s country club.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

Did such jackets actually exist though, or is it all advice simply to sell the cloth? Surely any retailer back in the day would simply find the right weight madras for a jacket, rather than making one with a cloth too thin and an almost all over lining?

My vintage madras sack looks about as translucent as that.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

In that case I stand corrected, however to all intents and purposes that's irrelevant as the plaid may well be incorrect for a jacket.

Oh, on that point, I agree.  A shirt is in order.

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

I couldn't actually judge the plaid's suitability for a jacket without seeing a larger quantity of it, but I'm sure you're all correct. (I cannot imagine things visually, but fortunately if I can actually see them I can form an opinion, so it's not a complete disaster.)

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

When that's washed itll mute down a bit...but the yellow square just looks like too large a repeat,  well for my tastes anyway..theres no reason it cant be used other than an aesthetic one...but then large plaids dont suit me...they look better on smaller people as they give the illusion of size...

Re: Hand-Made Bleeding Madras by yard

I like the colors.  But that's a risky plaid.  A madras jacket is bold by default, and such a large plaid enhances it.  I mean, I'd hate for our boy to go through all the hassle and expense to have a jacket he never wants to wear.  Not saying it absolutely couldn't turn out to be a cool jacket.  I just think it's got some risk.  But heck, you only live once, and why not do it in a bold madras plaid?  Or something...

Thanks lads.

Wont get to see the tailor till next week sometime. So stay tuned.
I did "try it on" this morning. Think it could work as a jacket, depending where we start the repeat on the shoulder…Ooooossssssaaaaaa.
