I think it was $70 to have a Vibram Christy resole on my Thorogood boots last year.
I'm more fascinated by the fact that one would use these soles for riding. They would seem to feel sloppy on the footpegs and offer dicey traction, I'd think. I say this as someone that was sliding around in the mud on such soles this weekend. The way the leather held up to shifter abuse in impressive though.
@ chatsworth osborne, jr.:
I've never taken my Bonneville trail riding or onto dirt roads for any length of time, so I don't have too much experience dealing with thick mud. I ride almost exclusively on paved roads and I have ridden in all types of weather and riding conditions. That being said, I have found the soles to be responsive and to have excellent control and traction while stopping and during parking maneuvers. These Red Wings have a lot better traction than a pair of vintage combat boots that I sometimes wear while riding. The combat boots are fine, but it takes a bit more effort to plant my feet firmly during parking maneuvers.
I also like that the one-piece sole doesn't have a defined heel edge because I can position my foot the way I like it under the shifter and on the peg. When I wear my combat boots which have a defined heel edge I have to cock my foot out to the side a little to position my foot the way I like it because the heel edge rests on the peg in a way that puts my toe out of the position under the shifter. (I hope I explained that in a way that makes sense, lol.)
Aren't these what Steve wore for cycling and other such activity?
Mine are still good from my original purchase a couple years ago, but I don't have a motorcycle, only a bicycle.

Great work T_J, great to see the before and after pics.
I'm about to send in a pair of 'Cameron' loafers for 'Prestige Re-crafting' package ( $150) with Allen Edmonds, so I'll endeavour to do some similar shots.
Neither of those Steves are cool in my book. See, I can be controversial sometimes.

I concur. My reference was merely to the ostensible coolness lauded by the popular imagination.
But it appears that he, cool or not, did wear the boots.

Paul Newman was the better actor, the more open minded, and at least McQueens Satorial equal. Unfortunately I can't find photographic proof of him wearing the right kind of Redwings for this thread.
Now those are cool Steves!

I could prattle on about motorcycling protective gear minutiae on how soles should be oil-resistant and not too grippy lest they lead they "catch" during a tumble...but anyway I'm not an off roader and was mentioning that this sole doesn't inspire confidence in a soaked muddy field.
Anyway, I must note that they didn't pull the typical cobbler screw-up of returning the things several shades darker to hide some damage they inflicteded.
I do like Red Wing 875s. I wear mine mainly in winter, weekends and other off-duty time when I may be venturing out into the cold and the muck.
