There don't seem to be too many with black tie as the original topic, though I'm sure it crops up many times in various threads...

Ah, that was my mistake. Tuxedo does turn up a lot.

Re: Black Tie Is An Infallible Sign Of A Bad Party....

/\  all good advice, just would point out that while midnight blue is nice, it's not easy to find in a ready-made tuxedo so don't worry if you wind up with the standard black tuxedo/dinner jacket, because they're never supposed to see sunlight anyway ... if your tuxedo needs a brushing then brush it off, otherwise, black will do nicely, as it's done for 130 years ......

Got to say it doesn't look great in midnight blue, it might sort some peoples colouring better...but its a thumbs down from me, tne bias being as ive got a brown hair black seems to work well..both DOW and Mr Craig are a bit blonde arent tney, couldnt see connery in a blue DJ, the other colour which appears darker than black is very very dark green... again not sure Id recommend that either...in my defence I did three years hiring out this stuff do I do have some experience of it...

Black can be stark...but midnight blue is as subjective to who it works on as black...i think blue just doesn't carry the same statement as black...its a whole different quality to the look...

It's interesting, about the color. Men who are hidebound about being proper think black is the only choice. The thought is the greenish sheen and not as natty look is the indelible sign of a gentleman. Meanwhile, dandies, in the truest sense of the term, always prefer midnight blue because it's more handsome and bespoke looking. Actually, the black lapels make the blue stand out and accentuates the panache.

Re: Black Tie Is An Infallible Sign Of A Bad Party....

midnight blue does not look blacker than black but it can be groovy baby ... I used to have a few tuxedos but now I'm down to one ... it's bespoke, black, and beautiful and I hope I'll always be able to fit into it, I'd like it to see me through .... it probably will ... I mean you want to have a well-cut old dinner suit, when you're old ... what geezer-aged guy wants to buy a new tuxedo?  although I remember one nonagenarian who used to order a dozen suits and sport coats at a time from our old tailor, the tailor was in his eighties and this customer was in his nineties, it was beautiful to see, dauntless ... this old grandee was a midnight-blue tuxedo guy ..... loaded

I went for the good barathea with mohair and the nice silk, all proper stuff from England ... however if I hadn't outgrown my wildman years Ivy dj from the Andover Shop I wouldn't have needed a second one ... why not just get another, larger one from Press, Brooks, Andover?  because I wanted one that was sharp and the old English tailor delivered ... miss him man
