The Perfect T-Shirt

Do you guys have any reccommendations as to who is currently producing classic styled t-shirts with a nice high neck and thick collar? I'm looking for both short and long sleeved versions in basic solid colours.

So far I've tried the Lands End long sleeve 'Super-T' which has too wide of a neck; the Uniqlo 'Supima Cotton' long sleeve tee which has both too wide of a neck as well as a skimpy collar and lastly the Hanes short sleeved Beefy-T (Honduras made) which looked promising out of the bag but the collar quickly lost its shape after a couple of times wearing it.

Well, I can tell you what wouldn't work (i.e. certainly without high neck and thick collar) and that's the Zimmerli shirts and the American Apparel shirt -- though I like their summer T.  Though I like the light weight fabric.    Collar collapses pretty quickly.  That said, the Canadian made Brooks white t is more in line with something you might want to check out.

I had some Sunspel a while back -- but it seems like their pricing has gotten pretty steep.

Goodwear, but can be a bit pricey if you are in the uk and europe as it's via 'bongo'.

Muji - 2 for a tenner. Or 511 tactical - high neck, long body, 3 pack about 30 notes from various online suppliers. I would forget Hanes, FOL and the old time makers - their products now are mainly sub-standard sweatshop garbage!

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

Thanks for the suggestions. I was really disappointed when the collar on the Hanes Beefy-T's collapsed just in a matter of a few wearings, they would have otherwise been perfect.

@Horace: Sunspel makes some really nice stuff, but they are way out of my budget for something basic like a t-shirt.

@Acton: The Goodwear shirts look nice but may be a little expensive all things considered (I'm in Italy).

@Ian: I like the price-point of the Muji tees. Can you confirm the neck is high, thick and doesn't loose its shape easily?

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

I usually just get Gildan, Anvil, Jerzees, Hanes, or something equally inexpensive, for some reason I don't seem to have the collars collapse on me too quickly .....

sometimes they go a bit floppy after a while but I'm not trying to have them perfectly aligned and straight across the throat because no t-shirt really stays that way for long, why bother?  but before I learned about the existence of collapsing neck syndrome here I never noticed that it was something that happened ......

more than $12 for a t-shirt is more than I will spend, most of the ones I buy are $5 or less, I'm overdue for a couple of new ones .....

I almost always buy colored t-shirts ...... hardly ever wear t-shirts as undershirts ....

I do like to have two sizes on hand though, large for normal days and extra-large for post-overindulgence days ......

I go with FotL every time these days. Luckily there is a chap down the market who sells seconds £1 each so just replace a weeks worth every 6 months and use the old ones for rags etc or take to the cloth recycle bins.

They are pretty inconsistent in styles he gets but at least 4 have a great high neck and a double stitch seam.

/\  I forgot to mention Fruita da Loom, they're good, I have some, in fact I've been bummed they don't offer a long-sleeved pocket tee, the basis of my style .....

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

^ Oli, if you want an 'undershirt' style tee have you tried the Goodwear seamless that come in a 2 pack ( product code: GT-6000) ?

Very similar to the old Hanes 'tagless' t's, lighter weight cotton with no body/side seams and a tapped collar and shoulder seams.

I've heard good things about Pro5, and they do specifically reference the tight neck in their descriptions.

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

I would like to big up the Edwin T-shirt. Super comfy and splendid on the moobs. A nice neat slightly raised collar adds a nice a detail and looks superior to others under the B down. The key though is a good length and I do like a good length. Nothing worse than not feeling probably tucked in. Slightly expensive but certainly worth it.

HOOT, while this doesn't satisfy your criteria for solid colors, nevertheless I'll recommend Yellow Rat's wide offerings of surfer t-shirts. They've got vintage heft and the bigger collar. They're also very jazzy.

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

So y'all wear shirts under your buttondowns? Somehow that's something that's never grown on me... I find it pretty uncomfortable.

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

I do it all the time, I wear Hanes beefy T, I think that they're good. FoTL would be the perfect one but the ones I have bought have all shrunk too much for me.

Re: The Perfect T-Shirt

I wear v-necks in white under my work shirts, grey Fruit of the Loom (pocket less) on the weekend under shirts, and the best all around t-shirt in my humble opinion are the fruit of loom grey pocket tees*. I will also add that I like my t shirts to be soft and love when they become a little opaque.

*They have recently changed them and ruined them. I have been picking up old stock here and there.
