The College Scarf

I likes me Tootal silk scarves, a bit moddy perhaps, but they add a dash of colour to an outfit and look a bit rakish. The silk is much warmer than you would expect, but when the mercury drops and it's real overcoat weather maybe sterner stuff is called for.

I've never really cared for scratchy wool scarves so my attention turns to the college scarf. They seem a much smoother knit and offer a wide range of distinctive colours. I seem to think that the learned Chipper has been depicted weaing one.

Any thoughts?

I still have my old college scarf Woof, and wear it, as you suggest, when the mercury drops.

Re: The College Scarf

I'm a fan of Tootal silk scarves. I recently bought a paisley replica of one I bought back in 1968. I was a bit disappointed that their scarves now appear to be shorter than my original made in England ones.
Peter York was on BBC4 last night, presenting a documentary on Hipsters and he was sporting a decent silk scarf.
When it gets colder I wear Scottish tartan wool scarves. I find they are a versatile option.
I'm not sure I would wear a college scarf anymore because I would feel the need to wear a duffle coat or pea coat and as an old geezer I can't now pull off that look. The other problem is that I feel you can't wear a known college scarf if you didn't attend the college.

Re: The College Scarf

I dig and recommend the lambswool/angora scarves from Begg & Co. the most. I've got one in blackwatch tartan and two more in olive and cedar that I wear all the time. They look real dicty with my horsehide too! I think I have some pics from the Italy trip that I'll post when I eventually dump them photos. Anyhoo, college scarves are real tacky, I think. Those lean soft lambs wooly scarves are ultra i.v. (in vogue, arf arf) and they look most hep with anything draped in shetland or oxford; doubly so with any chunky slouchy tweeds: http://www.oconnellsclothing.com/59-Begg-and-Co.-Lambswool-and-Angora-Jura-Scarf-Harvard.html

Re: The College Scarf

There's a slate and denim colored cashmere on O'C that would look real nifty with this old Brooks flannel vine that I've got but it's out of my scarfing price range.

Re: The College Scarf

They also have those plain striped college mufflers that I don't care for.

Re: The College Scarf

I LUV university scarves. Please see: http://www.britishgoods.com/1/products/product/listing/48-university-scarves.html

We happened on this store when we visited Maine last Thanksgiving. (They also sell a good number of Barbour jackets.) I picked up a U of Manchester.

There was a big to-do on the AAAC site about whether one should or should not wear colors that one doesn't belong to, so to speak (in my case, for example, I never attended Manchester). I personally think one shouldn't worry.

While we still at the accessories department; can someone point me in the direction of some gloves?
