I tend to wear them with sneakers and a white tee or a solid coloured OCBD and loafers.
I have three pairs and i tend to wear them with white sneekers and white Polos.
Pocket tee or polo and CVOs
I wear mine with a solid colour polo (usually something from Sunspel), Sneakers or camp moccs, with a sweat shirt or windbreaker if the weather is dubious.
Love the colors on those, woofboxer! I'd be tempted to snag them all...
I have a mix of 60s, 70s & 80s vintage (the 80s one in particular is much shorter than the rest) and a 'new' (00s) by Bass which is all ripped and I just wear for mowing the lawn, and a 'new' (00s) by Berle which is more old-mannish being pleated and wide ... I wear them all with either polos (white or brown usually) or tee shirts. Shoes are either penny loafers or Jack Purcells or some other old Converse. The black tee and Converse and shorts is a holdover from my college years that I'm kind of trying to get away from. Just picked up a nightblue navy tee and have added it heavy into that rotation.
Polo (light or navy blue) and Purcells
I wore a pink linen button-down and tan loafers on vacation. And a bucket hat.
OCBD with rolled sleeves, CVOs, or boat shoes.
t-shirts, most of the time ....
Another question about your shirts, polos, and t-shirts.
Tucked in or untucked?
Personally I don't do tucked in with shorts - just feel uncomfortable, especially in summertime.
with walk shorts, for me, t-shirts and polos, untucked ....
can't even remember the last time I wore a tucked-in button-down shirt with shorts ..... if that rare event ever occurs again I'll report it here .....
also: sometimes I will wear an old pair of madras shorts as a bathing suit .....
back in the day we had bathing suits of madras, they were not uncommon in the '60s ... made of cotton, brass clasp fasteners, little buttoned flap pocket in front ....
they took a long time to dry
O'Connell's still sells the things, and I really want a pair, but they're cut a bit too short for me these days ....
if they were available in a walk-short length I'd buy them though

Untucked all the way.
As Martyn says, some can pull it off. I'm a golfer (well, at the amateur level) and still don't like the look or feel. I think if I wore it with my gth plaid Pendleton slacks I'd probably tuck them in.
I wear mine with solid colour polos and my blue popover OCBD. Untucked and with CVOs or penny loafers.
My rule for the tuck: long sleeve shirts get tucked in. Always. Short sleeve shirts are mostly untucked (depending on their length).
Any good sources for madras shorts this year? Lands End not doing them anymore....
For me also a Lacoste or a knit polo. Almost never a BD shirt...
/\ I also like my old graphic t-shirts with madras shorts a lot, the more random the design of the shirt the better
it's hard to beat the combo of a vintage Butthole Surfers tee and a pink/green/yellow pair of J. Press madras shorts = wtf
early-to-mid-'80s indie horrorshow
I've got the shorts at hand but my old Meat Puppets shirt is too thin and worn and nobody makes t-shirts like good old Screen Stars anymore ......
gonna freak some people out with the wacked-out madras in a few minutes, wish them luck ......
