Arousing skinhead literature

I'm a great fan of the skinhead literature by the acclaimed novelist Richard Allen. I find it to be very arousing literature. I expect you all do too.

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

A lot better than Salinger, I might add. Teenage, alienated sensibility goes right over my head.

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

/\  Yuca, over here we're not familiar with those books but I remembered they were cited in Jon Savage's great punk exegesis England's Dreaming ......

here's an article that discusses them in connection with the release of the 2007 skinhead movie This Is England:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2007/apr/26/afreshcropofskinheadsimag

Richard Allen's Independent obituary mentions the influence of Skinhead and the other books in the series on the very entertaining Yardie trilogy by Victor Headley, which deals with Jamaican crime posses in London, which I did read and very much enjoyed.

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

For those who are unfamiliar with Richard Allen, this site might be worth looking at:

https://www.stewarthomesociety.org/sex/gensexco.htm

"The promotional copy for all Allen's books focuses on their depiction of violence. But although violence plays a major role in Allen's novels, it was by no means the only element crucial to his best-selling success. Allen's audience were obviously interested in reading about violence, but this violence was not simply 'Girls Ball games aggro,' it is extended into the realm of general social relations and sex. And it is a violence with a dualistic nature. It is simultaneously mechanical and mystical. It is beyond the control of those who vent it, but it is destined to be neutralised by some outside authority, usually the police, at the conclusion of each story"

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

I vaguely recall other remarks however I could be mistaken - if there is only one then apologies to GG for exaggerating the case. Likewise, if the remark in question was not actually intended as a snide diss then apologies for misinterpreting. And to be fair I have enjoyed paraphrasing him in this thread. Anyway: http://www.ivy-style.com/rye-humor.html

The comment in question is near the bottom.

Incidentally, back when Jim had free rein of this forum, the poster in question had his own book published on the subject of ivy, which received a thorough denunciation on IS (back when IS wasn't anywhere near as good a site as it is nowadays, imo): http://www.ivy-style.com/clothes-mad-the-english-ivy-obsession.html He's received further back-handed compliments on IS since then, yet he loves them more than he loves us. Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen never fails.

I realise that being saying 'whilst' in the above, I've outed myself as an Anglophile nonetheless. Ooops.

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

I presume that the lyrics are somewhat tongue in cheek.

If I recall correctly I first encountered STS (and the antipathy to Pseudo Limey Skins generally) via Maximum Rocknroll magazine and could appreciate the negative response to such ersatz fakery. Perhaps this clip from the comedy movie Pick of Destiny is a more charming example of assault on Anglophile absurdity, pertinent event occurs from a minute or so in:

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

Again I am unable to navigate IS with sufficient dexterity to locate said remark.

Still - consternation? That's laying it on a tad thick, isn't it?

Although, I suppose we ought not to expect much more from a fellow who concerns himself unduly with the volume of traffic on a menswear forum.

Re: Arousing skinhead literature

Even the idea that this thread is about 'the literature of Richard Allen' is missing the point. Maybe GG is still upset about the dethronement of Jim (a sentiment not even worth discussing).

The comment in question is in this article (which I enjoyed): http://www.ivy-style.com/confronting-the-shadow-the-preppys-dark-alter-ego-the-bro.html
