60s Tweed Overcoat Fit

Just got this nice 60s Charter Lane/Yale Genton Harris Tweed overcoat today. Chest fits fine but shoulders seem a little big.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/vtg-HARRIS-TWEED-charter-lane-over-coat-wool-trad-ivy-44-chest-short-arms/391728457466?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Question: how were tweed overcoats suppose to "fit" in the 50s/60s? Any example pics?

Re: 60s Tweed Overcoat Fit

That's a really nice coat kyle.Overcoat sizing seems tricky when you're buying off an ebay listing, I've been lucky a couple of times and a couple of times I haven't. I've read that an overcoat is sized two inches bigger than the corresponding suit jacket size. A 40R jacket tends to be 21.5" - 22" measured across the chest so a 40 overcoat would be about 44", depending on the cut. if you're planning to wear a jacket under then a loose slouchy fit is better.

Re: 60s Tweed Overcoat Fit

I assume there is no padding in the shoulder, as the coat is a Balmacaan style where the sleeves are part of the body of the coat, as opposed to set in sleeves where they  are attached at the shoulder like those on a sports jacket. There may be scope for a tailor to take the shoulders in a little but I would wear it a bit and get used to the feel of the coat, steam it or get it cleaned. The sleeves could use being let down an inch or so (in my opinion). I really like the coat and it suits you well kyle.

Re: 60s Tweed Overcoat Fit

I bought my coat at Teijin in Ginza. It's sized 42 and I usually wear a 38. Fits perfectly over my jackets.

(mentioned the store because I see you're in Japan).

Re: 60s Tweed Overcoat Fit

Fit is good and appropriate for the type of coat, I have two similar ones made by Aquascutum, I've had some of the puffiness taken out in the sleeve, but it still billows more than a normal overcoat.

Nice, similar fit to my tweed Mackintosh, which personally I think it the nicest cut for an overcoat, might not keep you as warm as a heavier longer coat though
