Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

Hi all

just to stimulate a bit of chat here, what do you wear in Ivy style at this time of year?
Any new purchases you have been waiting to break out this year?

Walks with animals or to/from the Pub
Meeting friends and family for seasonal festivities
Relaxing around the house
Events and meals

Does some kind of Christmas or Winter jumper appear?

No doubt the big coats, thicker trousters, jumpers and heavier shirts are worn.
But do you have any particular Item you associate with Ivy wear and this time of year?

Saturday was a cold day, off to football, my JS (very) heavy shetland sweater from around 2011 came out with my LE flannel lined chinos, probably the only time I get to wear this marvellous sweater, usually too warm for sitting in the pub with my pooch which I do quite a lot ! John knocked a tenner off the sweater ' for old times sake' as I think we'd been talking about the IS, it was still around £135, what price now ? Oh, and the Astorflex leather dessies came out,

Great warm winter outfit Stax and the Brentford win must have added to your general wellbeing . Mind you even West Ham managed to beat the Geordies recently.

I had a pair of Clarks leather dessies on over the weekend but very much aware that one slip at my age and it could be serious so I switched back to  dainite  soles.

Robbie - Yes the football on Saturday kept us warm, the Astorflex dessies have the dainite soles, for some reason leather dessies don't look as good as suede, the toe on the Astorflex leather ones seems to be a slightly different shape, but they are good winter boots,

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

I love Ivy at this time of year. The colour palette and materials look superb.

Loafers are currently in hibernation. Footwear has to be sturdier brogues, Paraboots and C&J double soled Chuckas.

Moleskin 5 pockets and cord trousers from Cordings, Bills and JS. Some heavy weight cashmere wool flannels are worn with a tweed Keydge jacket to anything fancy.

Merino and cashmere knits have made way to sturdier heavy duty knits including the Bean Norwegian and my beloved Cordings shawl collar cardigan. Tartan shirts look great underneath these - especially Press.

I have a number of flannel shirts from Bean but the collars are too small to roll but very comfortable.

Overcoats are essential. For casual outings you can't beat a quilted Barbour with Polartec lining. Ideal for the Boxing Day point to point. For more formal outfits it's Raglan tweeds or a lovely navy blue cashmere/wool Ralph Polo coat.

As I get older I feel the cold so I have a wide assortment of scarves ranging from College, cashmeres, tartans and tweeds. I also like the Eeky-thump hats.

Yesterday, in Birmingham it was bitter. Heavy navy JS cords from last year were worn with a navy Press shaggy dog, a Mercer tartan shirt and double soled MTO Crockett and Jones brogues. A Polo peacoat and tartan scarf completed my look.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

For a festive pub lunch with former colleagues today I  wore:
Brooks Stewart tartan button down under a Oatmeal Lord Jeff crew neck Shetland, US made selvedge 501s, white Uniqlo ribbed socks, Paraboot Michaels, vintage US Army M65 jacket, Pringle Stewart tartan scarf topped off with an Elosegui Basque beret.

I do relish the opportunity to get out the cold weather stuff.

Wore a Morlands dark fleece sheepskin to the football. Veldtshoen boots -Cheaney for M&S sale purchase when Marks were in 'Best of British' mode. Rubber soles as leather is no good for standing on terraces in cold weather. Not had to wear gloves yet.

I use those gaiters from COVID days instead of a scarf now. Easier to stuff in a pocket.

I am in pensioner mode regarding the cold. So have a Dunelm hooded blanket and thermals from Primark and Lidl which are never visible in public.

Submariner jumper is Winter only. Too hot otherwise.

More Jack Hawkins/Kenneth More/ The Cruel Sea than Ivy.

They also offer excellent Countryman sweaters with patches.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

My journey here was heavily influenced by Ralph Lauren.

Natural shoulder tailoring, Shetland sweaters, surcingle belts ,double soled brogues and uni stripe oxfords.

Christmas was always a beautifully presented season in Ralph world.

First of all the merchandise would take on a festive vibe. Cashmere cable knits in red, deep forest green, navy and black, tartan shirts with black knit ties,  thick Aran knits in black and red, black watch dinner jackets, red cord trousers and a plethora of tartan shirts either in rugged flannel designs, Oxford cloth or poplin.

Next up in the subtle change to the music played in store. The classic American crooners are still heard but you add to this jazz trios performing Christmas classics and a dollop of newer artists like Michael Buble and you have a lovely soundtrack that evokes America of the past.

Holiday scented candles burn throughout the stores. The aroma of the perfect Christmas.

Employees are the ideal representation of the holiday season.High cheeked sales girls in tartan trousers and red cashmere sweaters help create the image of the dream Holiday season.

It feels like the Christmas you always wanted with the classic Christmas you remember as a kid.

Like Ralph I’m Jewish but I feel Christmas is so much more than a religious festival. To me It marks the end of the year and the hope for a brighter future. It helps brings families together around the table. Traditions are enacted either universal or specific to your own family. It is a lovely time.

I hope I haven’t offended  anyone who is religious with this perspective.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

Another good post AS. I was also heavily influenced by RL in the early 90s when I lived in Canada and there was a shop near to my apartment. I still have several shirts from that time. When I returned to the UK, my brother and his boys wanted some of the shirts.

I am a Christian and am not in the least offended by your Christmas perspective. I see a pagan element to the festival running parallel and alongside the Christian celebrations.

I was offended, years ago, when I had to cover work duties in the office over Christmas whilst my Jewish senior colleague took time off and left me to cover all bases. It must have rankled with me because I remember it to this day!

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

Last night I ventured out for dinner with an old friend.

The night was bitter so I wrapped up accordingly.

A Harris tweed JS slack, Uniqlo mock neck, very heavy J Press wipcord trousers and a thick Polo coat.

Warm enough to wait for the train, comfortable enough for the festivities ahead and a sharp Steve McQueen-esque look for dinner. Albeit worn by an overweight, bald Jewish guy from Birmingham.

On the table next to me were a young couple in their early twenties. What stood out was how slovenly the chap looked. A pink polo shirt, baggy, ill fitting jeans and trainers that had seen better days. His dining companion had clearly made the effort and looked lovely.

It surprises me how so many youngsters I see who have no interest in their appearance  or stick to the uniform described above.

Pembury Tavern Hackney Wednesday 4th.

Coming upstairs from the gents I passed a girl heading downstairs in a long green, sparkly dress. She looked like she was going to The Oscars so I told her she looked glamorous.

This pub is normally an ale drinkers place and we had just come from a beer festival. Attendees were dressed as you might expect.

Being retired, I had forgotten about Christmas party season. Later on, a whole crowd of young women left the pub. All were wearing sparkly dresses.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

Mrs Stax and I ( & Nelly the Viszla) , are on our annual trip to Whitstable in Kent, we’re here for 3 nights and dining out each night, usually I bring a sports jacket with me but this year no jacket just couple of cardigans to wear under my JS overcoat, none of the restaurants are formal in any way so I would have felt overdressed in a jacket and probably the only person wearing one !
Kingston1an- I’ve noticed in recent years ( particularly this time of year), young ladies make a real effort in dressing up whereas the young guys look like they’re going to the gym or going to work on a building site,

Pembury Tavern Hackney Wednesday 4th.

Now owned by Five Points (well since around 2019), call in occasionally as it's pretty local but only if passing as it's out of our way for anything.

Most likely be wearing chino's, vintage Levi's slacks (not 5 pockets, either Continentals or Flip Tops) with an Oxford and over shirt (Pendleton or Levi's) unless I go with a cardigan. A wool/cotton mix loop collar might also be an option, (recently acquired a lovely 50s 5 button viyella in red which is perfect christmas colour) over white tee.

The above will be worn for public house adventures and cultural walks around the city over the break as we're not visiting anyone this year for once – i've passed the buck to other family members for a change.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

A rare opportunity to dress up fully yesterday for our son's graduation.

My clothes were a soft blue stripe, button down LE dress-shirt from USA, Nick Bronson knitted tie (grey and navy horizontal bar stripe), Jaeger 3/2 Ivy-detailed unstructured sport jacket in grey-blue herringbone, flat front navy wool trousers, C&J Grassmore grain black derbys and a vintage grey herringbone, storm flap mac (T. M. Lewin, back when raincoats were their original speciality).

A few friends and family at the event were dressed up, but a lot were more or very casual. Some nice suits and looks around which was good to see.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

I was out with an old school mate yesterday afternoon. We get out every six weeks or so. Yesterday was a Gloverall duffle day. Matched with an old - but not worn often - flecked JS Shetland, Southwick shirt, M & S quilted gilet/liner (still available online and well worth it if that's your thing), Lee jeans and Paraboot Michaels.
The pub we were in is a real ale bar, with a flagged floor meaning it is freezing. Almost had to put the gloves on at one stage! Usual dressed crowd apart from two tradional skinheads that looked to be in their 70s.
The dressed-up party girls were arriving when we were leaving!
Ps another shout out for Woolaway. I've a couple of their sweaters - great value.

Nice work AndyV. You might of benefitted from a wee nip of whiskey to warm the cockles.

Traditional skinheads - very rare now. Most evolve towards normality I suppose. Even if sixteen in '68, you're now 72, cor!

Does not apply to the heavy metal crowd though. People tell me about bands that had albums out when I was at school and know all about their career since and who 'the tribute bands' are.

I had a pal who passed away in Summer and had 'Highway to Hell' at his funeral. Final song was another one from AC/DC. In  fairness he did not dress like them. If you met him you would assume he was an old school bank manager. I don't think his wife was a heavy metal type.

Re: Midwinter / Christmas Ivy wear

Ventured into Soho last night for jazz plus pre and after drinks with two chums, one of whom is a member here (Stacey Boy).
Navy Aquascutum mac over Hardy & Johnson Donegal tweed jacket, Uniqlo merino polo neck, white Bedford cord jeans and Sanders horsebit loafers. Oh and a beret.
There was a particularly good vibe in the French House pub, exceeded my optimal alcohol intake and got home far too late.
