Slim,
This evening I ventured into Birmingham with my family in search of buffalo wings and a glass or two.
As the chosen venue is a bit basic I wore the Bean jacket with Levis and a chambray BB shirt. It's so practical as the evening was quite chilly. I also like the generous pockets.
I'm not familiar with those Sperrys
I agree Stax that the lines of Ivy are blurred these days. However, you mention wearing chinos, Gitman and Paraboots so you are not exactly straying too far from an Ivy esthetic. That's where I'm at as well.
Last week I attended a funeral of a cousin who was an original 1960s mod from Stepney, London. I travelled back from Finland and brought with me a BB white BD shirt and a black silk tie. When I tried the shirt on it didn't look right and I swapped it for a RL white shirt that I had in my English wardrobe . I couldn't remember how to do a Windsor knot for the tie and had to look it up. I wore black Seebago loafers (my brother wore Bass weeguns) and a non ivy grey mohair suit.
Robbie,
I'm sorry for your loss.
You make a very good point about Ivy lines being blurred. I feel that Ivy in the UK somehow sits in the middle of three influences - mod, workwear and Americana.
For example, the workwear stuff is Vetra and Paraboot, the Americana is Reyn Spooner and Pendleton board shorts, the Mod is Harringtons and Tootal scarves. It can be, if so desired, a quite ambiguous style. Ivy in the States reminds me of the classic haberdasheries on Jermyn Street
For me, Ivy is about my love of the silly little details such as a popover shirt, a flap pocket on an OCBD, going sock less in unlined loafers, patch and flap sports jackets, a raglan sleeve on an overcoat, patch madras fabric and brushed Shetland sweaters with collegiate hoops on the arm.
I also attended a funeral last week, my Aunt who was just a couple of weeks short of 92,so a good innings, I guess I’m ‘ wringing ‘ the last few wears out of a suit I’ve had for 18 years, not Ivy but I guess ‘ softish ‘ Italian tailoring, Brooks flat collar shirt, nondescript black tie and Rancourt black strap loafers, sadly I think I’m going to have to wear this ensemble again in the not too distant future,
Robbie - yep keeping the basics Ivy ,
As an aside I was in town to buy the field jacket the week before last, I called into Chiltern Street, didn’t buy anything, tried on some FOB bedford cords and as I suspected the fit wasn’t for me, ( 34 too big in the waist, 32 too tight in the leg), had a chat with the guys , the Italian chap asked if my chinos were JS. chinos, nope they’re Uniqlo, he said ‘ don’t worry we’ve all got them ‘ ! I also called into Uniqlo, I still can’t get over how good their OCBD’s are at around £30, all base colours which I have covered so no need to buy any, I was tempted but they would have just been put into ‘ stock’ and probably not worn,
