Gun Boats - like `em or h8 `em?

Who has gunboats?  (Gunboats = large double sole shoo-monsters with very broad 360 degree welting)

Do you like gunboats or hate them?

What gunboats do you have gentlemen?

l've been a huge fan of gunboats since l was a young child of about 3 (used to always take my dads shoos [out] and play with them for hours and look at all the stitching). l was purchasing big monsters with 360 welting from my mid teens. My love of gunboats has never left me. Many good memories with my gunboat-monsters.

l'm willing to bet Mr Pollock has the biggest gunboat collection around.

Feel free to post top notch `gunboat porn' too....pics of your favourite gunboats.

Regards: your Shooman  (we need more shoo topics).

l notice Trickers does all their biggest gunboats (St James Collection) with a wider stitch [than normal] along the welt. ls this as secure as the single sole Trickers with closer stitching??  Something really bothers me about the big Trickers gunboats l own......

I have an old pair of brown wingtips (my brown brogues) which i got from my uncle.  Others have called them gunboats - is that a common term?  i like them a lot.  they're the only ones i have.

Gunboats are not just double sole shoes. They are exactly how l described in my original post. Double sole must be verging on the very thick side.

Why don't you post `em Mike, so we can see if they are gunboats or not. (hopefully he buys it) wink

Re: Gun Boats - like `em or h8 `em?

lt's always good to have a shoo that's not so fancy....something more rough around the edges. There seems to be so much enthusiasm for the more refined elegant shoos, but the big ugly buggers (usually the gunboats) never seem to be praised like the more beautiful shoos. Why is it that big gunboats are the underdogs? Just because they are big and bulky, it doesn't mean that it is [neccerserily] a bad thing.

ls everyone avoiding the gunboats now? Shoo-snobs are snubbing the gunboats [l feel].

Nothing like wearing a pair of gunboats....meat for the feet. Everything gets crushed in your path. smile

Late edit:  can't spell (neccerserily) right now.

LOVE them

I have Vass Budapester, Alden longwing, Hanover longwing, florsheim longwing, Brooks Peal (Sargent) brogue boots...all great shoes.  Perfect for wearing with jeans

Would love to include a Dinklelacker in my collection at some point.

They're deffo an aquired taste, but once you can "see" the awesomeness of them, your life is changed

I have the Alden shell 974 brogued oxford.  As I've said elsewhere, if the longwing is a battleship, the 974 is a treatry cruiser.  It's good to have a pair of sturdy gunboats in wardrobe.

I love long-wing brogues, but I'm simply not impressed with modern offerings.
They just don't seem right somehow. It may be a lost art (to design those things).
One would hope Allen Edmonds, and Alden, would get it right: but they don't.
The British are hit or miss.

Unless one has a time machine, bespoke may be the only way to get a good wearable show, without buying shoes that are like army boots.

Ah man....l can't imagine how good it must be to have long wings in your collection.

ln the early days, l bought my gunboats through a Florshiem seconds shop. Unfortunately, they never had longwings in the stock. l always bought the plain toe and captoe gunboats (there were always unusual runoffs of shoos never available in the stores).  Wore the gunboats everywhere as a teen (in creeks, up mountains, on the beach)...destroyed quite afew of the rascals too.

Just bought a mate a pair of his first Trickers gunboats last week. He is absolutely delighted with them.

l've only ever seen one long-wing in real life. A blake stitched Moreshci.

These things should be long and sleek (not stubby & fat).
Country grain leather is also best.

These are some gunboats, posted by that Patrick guy on Andyland:

Pay no attention to his silly words, they are Florsheim I believe.

I like those fat-assed, clumpy US loafers too.

Shooey, there are some Alden long wing brogues posted here on Andyland. My personal taste is the Alden toe is too blunt, as I think it should be more pointed. But impressive shoes.

Tugboats?  Canoes?  No matter what they are called I disdain them.  This reflects poorly upon my character, I know.

Totally amazing `gunboats' Tony. Simply awesome. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/Aportneyface-1.gif

Here are some of mine:

Allen Edmonds shell cordovan (Cambridge model).
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0008-6.jpg

Trickers St James collection.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0007-1.jpg

Trickers St James colection.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0006-2.jpg

Jeffery West.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0004-3.jpg

Santoni Handmade brogues.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0003-3.jpg

Johnny Moke (London). They are still stiff as boards 10 years later. Most bulky gunboat in the collection. lt's huge. $600 at the time.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0002-2.jpg

Santoni Handmade brogues.
Eventhough the stitching doesn't go 360 degrees, it still has a 360 degree welt. An elegant brogue, but still a strong shoo: still falls under the definition of a `gunboat'. This shoo below is a real tough old bird.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b151/Marc_au/Ron1/PIC_0001-3.jpg

l've got a couple of duplicates of the pairs above. l've also got a couple of `gunboats' in the shed (they are covered in dust and have spiders living in them. They will be worn [again] one day). l've also got a pair in my car boot in case l unexpectedly go to the beach.

l reckon Mr Pollock would have at least 50 `gunboats'. He's a lucky guy.
