In Lou's defence I did hear him do a great interview when he was out here once on audio quality and declining standards in fidelity. Man after my own heart.
MMM is supposedly the classic example of a 'contract breaker' - he was still contractually obliged to make two more LPs for whatever label that was with, so just knocked some unlistenable stuff in a hurry to get out of the contract.
You're probably right about Black Sabbath and MMM didn't really penetrate the mainstream like a true genre setting album probably would. I did hear in an interview with David Bowie who credited Lou Reed as a) inventing metal and b) taking rock into the avant garde. Both of these comments are highly debatable I think. What isn't debatable here is that David Bowie loves to flap his gums.
today is a don't give a fuck Ivy day.

The great Lester Bangs on Metal Machine Music
"My pet land hermit crab, Spud, who sometimes goes for days at a time curled up inside his shell in a corner of the cage so you gotta check to see if he's dead, likes MMM a lot. Every time I put it on, he comes out of his shell and starts crawling happily around the sand and climbing the bars. It is, in fact, the only time I ever see him get any exercise. Either that or he's dancing."

Thanks, Patrick!
Lester Bangs is always funny to read, though sometimes he doesn't get it. Like when he accused Miriam Linna (drummer among others with the Cramps, Kicks fanzine maker, owner of Norton Records) being a right wing extremist or playing with fascist imagery...
I Still Hate CDs, is what I expect of rock n' roll!

H, we've all been worried sick about you. Some thought you'd been sold into sexual servitude - or worse.
