Jesus, don't let Oliver hear you calling him a Mod.
I'd agree with you on the weller birds nest. A crew cut could look better on some (and probably would on most) but you are right in that it probably wouldn't suit Oliver.
I tend to lean towards an early sixties style, whether american or continental influenced. The latter when it comes to tailoring and cut, the former when it comes to cloths and patterns, I suppose. I really don't have a problem with the term mod, I just don't consider myself one at all. I simply have no desire nor feel the need to align myself with some outmoded fraternity ideal, and feel the same towards any idiosyncratic group alliance or faction, especially when based exclusively on one's individualism and disntinction, which I tend to find somewhat ironic. It's one thing to schmooze about sharp dress, yap about cool records, dig Italian scooters or vintage motorcars with your mates - whatever thrills - but I can't quite understand why any grown-up would want to fold themselves into a square. To me this whole notion was born entirely of a youth culture and thus would seem a bit silly and tasteless for anyone to carry on into their thirties and beyond without simply conceding to an individualist with varying influences and interests. It kind of becomes a "schtick" otherwise. That's just my personal take on the matter. We (hopefully) all grow up eventually, some with more class than others. The truth is that I take my inspiration much less from what I, and surely others here, may have once associated with "mod" culture (For the record, I detest Northern Soul- though I'm still crazy 'bout black r'n'b, and dig my brand of soul music from the shoutin' and stompin' Fortune Records vaults!) and I tend to borrow much more from Mid Century design and aesthetic than anything else; be it modern art, film, music/records, clothing, design and industry, or even architecturally. I have many friends who'd surely consider themselves 'mod' (including a few gents here, I reckon) and that's fine by me! I just don't personally associate, nor in truth, have I any such desire to do so when it come sot Ivy and jazz stylings either.. is there not a proverb about the many different fruits?
I could probably use a slight trim and shape up at that before my trip to New York next week. : )
Cheers
PS - I think this haircut would not be uncommon for any young person ~1964 and could be equally linked with the smart dressed youth across the waters, as well as those sportin' thick stripes and rubber soles, flat fronted highwaters and movin' on the sidewalk surf along the Pacific coast!

Did you have those links made from the blazer fabric?
very nice!
Thanks - they're just bog standard silk knots.

Cold weather signals the donning of 'the uniform':
blue brooks OCBD
navy lambswool crewneck from uniqlo
lvc 505's
red socks
burgundy pennies
If I go outside I will either throw on a grey herringbone sack or an olive barbour. This is essentially what I will wear until May, with slight variations depending on how cold it is and if there is snow on the ground. Makes life easy.
Pale blue Makers - modest spread collar and sleeve monogram - very vulgar, according to some
Navy Paine cashmere v-neck
Chocolate brown, wide wale cords - Bill's Khakis
Navy Falke socks
Mid-blue canvas slip-ons
Sunday lunch Ivy
My old Dad (77):
US-made navy RL zip-up
plaid button-down
Maroon heavy-ribbed crew neck jumper
Jeans
Nunn Bush boat shoes
Just what he wears. Not bad for an old 'un.
Andy's Dad has thrown up another talking point:
At what age should you stop wearing jeans?
In the words of Donald "Duck" Dunn, "If the shit fits, wear it".
