Am I color blind or are you? It looks red to me, not green!

Re: Ivy League style for today

A grey day, here in Cyprus. Occassional drizzle and sun trying to break through the clouds .

A very short, tapered College Boy cut (self-cut) , which has, now, long `grown out`, and just been` tidied up`, over the ears. (No doubt more reminiscent of   70`s David Soul,  than  late 60`s/ early 70`s McQueen).
A plain white ,Hanes, thin cotton T (not the thicker, beefy T`)
A midnight blue , Smedley, merino poloneck (with the white cotton T peeking out just a very little,  at the bottom of the rollneck)
Slim, Levis `Grit`( a grey-ie/ cream colour. Putty??) 501 jeans, with very small turn-ups
A `White of Hawick`, ribbed, merino lambswool shawl collar cardigan in Camel
Cream, Wigwam, ribbed crew socks
Rich brown, George Cox, suede Playboy style chukka boots

Like Land Rover Defenders in suburbia, the functionality of Barbours is lost on me; they only seem to come into their own in really dirty conditions (pack of slobbering dogs, sleeping under bridges etc.). Chilly and stiff as a board in the cold too.

Roetzel's championing of them in his book ('your unofficial passport to the better circles of society' or somesuch nonsense) is guaranteed put one off once and for all.

I stand by the polar-quilts. Warm, practical, good cut to them. Forget the connotations. When there is a chill in the air it is a perfect fix.

The wax jackets though, I agree, are awful things to be trapped in.

A very self-satisfied Tory couple I used to know each used to wear one - and the little badge that went with them - when out holding hands.  That told me everything I needed to know.  My daughter, who keeps horses, would not be seen dead in one.

P.S.: That Roetzel guy... I googled him. Not my type of guy... I think I read one of his blogs once. I don't like that "Gentleman" approach... Too far away from realitiy. Seriously.

He knows his onions. And the book is worthwhile despite the heavy product placement. Buy the hardback so you can discreetly dispose of the pic of 'underpants man' on the cover.

Re: Ivy League style for today

Interestingly enough a friend of mine lived for 5 years in London and married a London girl. She always says Barbour is rubbish and proletarian. Probably because of Kate Moss and the "festival" connotation? yikes

Re: Ivy League style for today

The Jodhpur boots seem to be quite difficult to shift. God knows why? Beautiful things. Paisley Shirt with frilly cuffs, Levis Super-Slims, Jodhpur boots. It's 1966 all over again!

I'll defend the Barbour, on one side you have the toffs, and the under-tofflings, then you have the fact it has become the choice of drug dealers and certain elements of the chav community. You really have to have an honest liking of the coat to still continue to wear them. Like I said I think the Barbour quilt I have is a great cut. Lovely proportioned bit of kit. A classic in my eyes. And I do have more trees and fields surrounding me than houses. So it isn't out of place.
