^Great Ad
Thee Captain - I appreciate it.
BulldogNH - Thanks, Lands End.
I'll liken it to bobby sox on a girl. Very cute when girls are 10 or younger but on a 25 year old they'd look stupid.
This look was pervasive in casual wear in the '50s and early '60s in the U.S., especially amongst youth. But you could also catch Gene Kelly or Cary Grant sporting this look. In the '80s this look developed total nerd connotations. So, if you try to pull this off now, people either think you're a total geek or you're trying to look like you're from the '50s. Both of these would be true in my case. I wear cream Wigwams with loafers rarely. I like the look, but definitely expect to get some looks and / or comments from Average Joe. It's a look that can sink or swim based on the other items being worn, not to mention the degree of confidence exuded by the wearer.

No, I like to think there's something real subversive going on when I slip my Weejuns over my Wigwams. : )

Exactly. The 80s version was terry towelling, bright white socks, worn with dark trousers (probably burgundy sta prest or black pegs) and dark shoes (some 80s crap). The socks were in contrast to the trousers and shoes (and possibly matching the white grandad collar shirt, worn under the burgundy Y cardigan).
The 50s version is off white socks, and works best when worn with light coloured trousers and shoes. I've not actually done it with white socks, but every summer, when I wear chinos and tan longwings, light coloured socks look far better than darker ones. 80s it ain't.
All we need is a decent summer and we'll all be starring in thee off white I reckon....
A Symbol of Elegant Leisure.... I should say....love that ad Yuca...
At the risk of the wrath of GW, I wear off white wigwam socks quite a bit. With playboys and cords or 5 pockets or with loafers and chinos. It's Ivy as fook!
Yes, maybe one of the less timeless Ivy combos, but it's definitely Ivy.
I think OCBD's socks look fine.
I don't. Would have been much better with a solid or Argyle sock, stripes even but plain white? Come on FFS. If they're off white clearly Daz has been used 'cause they look super white.
Brown, white, burgundy, or were the shoes brown? Whatever, the white socks stand out like a sore thumb. How any fooker can think that looks ok beggars belief. I don't care if Miles Davis wore them on the cover of an album from 1960 that is in Mark "Forest Fan" Coyle's record collection and sold to him by a black GI in Soho. Those socks look ugly and shite.
Come on soggy, stop sitting on the fence mate!
Now you've gone and done it. Ruuuun for coooover!!!!!!
Now Dave was only asking the very same last year.....

'The full-on Ivy look has rarely been cooler'. Yeah, right. It's been out of fashion since 1967, and always will be, no matter what ridiculous parodies are in fashion.
I wear the white wool wigwams frequently, wore them with pebble grain AE venetians the other day. Their appeal really depends on what kind of look you are going for. I think they look great with burgundy loafers and chinos. Wouldn't wear the bright cotton type, unless I was involved in a sport of some kind.
