Usually, I do not post in this thread and maybe it would be better for my health to keep it that way, but lately I have been wondering if I really am on FNB.
I feel it all creeps in. The group think. Rules. Patronising. The moaning about how “bad people dress today”. Yes, rules, on FNB, of all places.
Replace “buy some vintage thisandthat” by “for a start, you should get those AE in copatlepapetl pepperoni” or “maybe you should actually indeed think to consider a pocket square, dear sir” and there is not much difference left.
Yes, Mercer’s pics where not a highlight and his outfit did not flatter him, but that’s the same for other outfits posted on here.
What I read here lately really made me a bit sad. The message behind all this is to follow some rules – made by whom? “The majority” of “us on here”? Really?
Why not actually ban him? Maybe it was time to write down an Ivy canon? And then only admit people who fit to it?
Wasn’t it “ivy from all angles”?
If there are rules it's a pretty broad church... you're not gonna appease everyone but I think a lot of us agree on some very specific things...that is why you won't find me posting anywhere else.. this forum doesnt have to appease everyone that's why there are other forums..on the whole if i was happy with whats available to buy today I might be on style forum or something like that.
There is a spot between defining a style and dilution to the point there is no style left.
I dont judge people on their clothes unless their wearing leather trousers...but I will judge the shit out of clothes
Well, I'll say it again, as I've said it before, I come here to talk shop and shop happens to be Ivy clothing. I can appreciate trad and Americana and retro '60s So Cal beach attire and even some of the mod stuff. Yeah, I said it.... And I'd never tell someone to get outta here because they post in a two-button jacket with darts nor would I tell them to take a hike because they choose to post cowboy boots. But there is the fact that this forum, like any other interest-based club or organization, revolves around a specific thing and if you aren't into it then you'll probably get flack if you insist on participating in a way that is counter to the interests or tastes of the members. That would be like me repeatedly driving my old pickup to the vintage Mustang club that meets up at the Wendy's every third Tuesday. Yeah, my car's old, and it's a Ford, but it ain't a Mustang and those guys may even appreciate it, but they'd likely get tired of me showing up with my pickup at every meet.
Mercer has no ultimatum. I'm not going to defend him outside of saying that he can post here, just as anyone else can post here. You stick your face on here and you take some whacks and you get some compliments, and Oliver may love my jacket and hate my trousers and Woof may like my shoes and hate my shirt and AC will relentlessly bash my print shirts and then YoungIvy will hate my entire outfit. That's fine. I don't think we need to discourage criticism. In the words of the great Frosty: "They're just clothes." It's not like I'm making a living with this stuff or have something at stake. If you guys hate my outfit, then freaking say something. That goes for you too Mercer. I already know you don't like my "dad pants", but you know what I did today? I wore them anyway.
Anyway, we've spent plenty of time on this and it's really just so simple. We just carry on and Talk Ivy.
I mean, if Thee Captain is welcome to post here, we don't have much leverage, do we? hehehe. Good to see you Cap. Looking tasty in that second shot.
I would just like to go on record as saying I love your trousers.
the love handles are not the problem, it's the lack of billow. billow exists to conceal Ivy paunch and that's why it is KEY!
I would say rise is more important than billow. Specifically: billow is not essential to the look, no matter how much it may be more flattering to the . . . ahem . . . more rotund, whilst rise is essential.
I think rise and Billow are equally essential, i personally don't like high rise pants with a slim fit shirt.
I am biased as i adore the billow but aesthetically the billow and the rise go hand in hand for me.
Lol and he's got a beautiful Mrs too. Sometimes life ain't fair lol
Its not all moonlight and roses for Oli .
I happen to know he is afflicted terribly by Fungal infections.
Which is the reason he wears Crocs on his feet most days.
Martyn, Olivee, good contributions back there. Oliver, could I get the rundown on that camel hair jacket? Did you pick that up recently?
Lol I'll try to keep that hideous trait in check AC ;-)
It's true but you don't have to be so callus, Tony.
WM, it's actually a camel cord sack and not camelhair. I've had it for a few years. I recently discovered that the light grey "brushed wool" Southwick that I picked up several months ago is actually a camelhair though!

The personal attacks against Mercer16 have all been unwarranted.
Having said that: While "Ivy from all angles" accounts for the fans of Mod style and vintage Americana, etc., Mercer's wardrobe is too far off the mark to be considered "Ivy" from any angle. At this point I'm actually rather appalled anyone is trying to defend Mercer's clothing. But I stand by my earlier suggestion for him to check out Tech Ivy... If Mercer comes back, hopefully he sees that and can figure out if Ivy is really right for him.
Beyond that, I think the constructive aspects of this discussion have been covered. Personally, I'm ready to move on.
