First 3 rules off the top of my head -
1. Collars may be fused but not lined, and the wearer should be adamant the fusing will loosen up after a few washes.
2. All trousers should be worn on or above the wearer's belly button, apart from trousers of the 5 pocket variety for which a maxium of one inch beneath the navel.
3. All codpieces should be shined to a glossy finish and all fastenings should be clear of pubic hair , (all inspections to be carried out by The Captain.)
Sidewinder, AC's comment on Brooks was just an opinion, not "lordly bs". And now you've come along and offered your own opinion, stating that the Garland shirt is very nice. This is how the forum should operate.
I myself have quite a few modern non-US-made Brooks shirts, and Lands' End, I keep in rotation for work. They may not approximate an old Makers or a Mercer, but they get the job done, and I have found them to be hard-wearing shirts. I recently discovered fraying on the top of my breast pocket on a Makers uni stripe right where I always hang my glasses. The only shirt I own that has done that.
Woah! This really blew up over the weekend, didn't it.
I haven't posted a pic in this thread as I doubt many people want to see me in my LVC 1967 505s day-after-day, but also because I see this thread only for 'special' outfits, particularly suited to the title 'Ivy League style for today'.
Interestingly, it is the 'for today' part of the title that I deem the most important. Seeing Tom's recent pic of all new Ivy clothes was one of the most interesting posts to me. Seeing you can still buy 'the look' today, without sourcing vintage was great. Conversely, seeing someone dressed head-to-toe in 50s/60s vintage gear does little for me.
We are posting in 2015 and I like the fact that this thread highlights that. Mixing vintage with modern to create and modern version of Ivy seems to way to go (to me, at least). Otherwise, aren't we all in danger of looking a little like we are dressed in fancy dress?
And again... Do I appreciate Mercer's style? Hm, not really. Not my cup of tea. Does it have a place here? Of course yes, it is a good basis for an evolved New England infused rugged style that can work out very well... Thee Captain is also far away from Ivy sometimes, and nobody bashes him... With a reason!!! We are not an exclusive club, are we?
P.S. I like that Bean Cabin Boot. Nice.

It seems that there are some feelings of sympathy towards Mercer. His shirts I can live with, and the Bean boots occasionally - but every outfit? Those things make feet sweat buckets, so I don't know how that works in real life. Still, even that I could ignore, but it's his jeans that make him unwanted in his present mode - they're downright depressing, extremely unflattering and blatantly too low for this thread.
All these comments about Mercer being on the receiving end of personal comments are completely absurd. Is our society so dumbed down that anyone making even the absolute slightest of efforts to do something is considered as having succeeded simply because they have possibly tried a little? And anyone making any form of constructive criticism is deemed as being unkind? No wonder our world is so messed up, when intelligent thought is considered unsporting.

Is calling someone a fattie intelligent? I feel as though Mercer took some flack that got a bit to close to not being about his clothes. And people have responded how theyve seen in from a more neutral view by calling some posters up on it, and now you lot have got all defensive I think an apology is what Mercer needs, but I'd also like people to be aware of what this forum is about before they start posting and people can be very critical of the clothes

There are days when I dress essentially just like Mercer... days off, days working in the yard, even days in the office when I know I'm going to have to help with some sort of heavy lifting. I'll be in a flannel and jeans and Red Wings. I can appreciate this look. And I've complimented Mercer's outfit at least once. No, it's not strict Ivy, but I'll also argue that it has it's place on our forum. Just like when Tom posts some of his great outfits with some CVOs, Sta-Prest high waters, and stripted t-shirt. I think most of us understand why this stuff generally fits in here although there's no OCBD or natural shoulder 3/2 jacket. I feel like we're making a mountain out of a mole hill and this idea of our desire for some sort of Ivy purity is being overstated.

The flap ads a nice little bit of variety.
Oh, and Patrick, I love the last outfit. Very handsome. And that new choir director looks like a real rocker. Looks like he's not going to have a shortage of willing groupies.
I dont see why its alright to get personal with someone just by the clothes they post..and it went that way pretty obviously to everyone..maybe the fault isnt all squared at Mercer?
Just because you restrain yourself at work shouldnt mean you use this thread for a catharsis release. Some people can actually be generally a lot more sensitive than others and unless you want this place to be like Lord of the Flies I think you should recognise you cant engage with everyone at a level you deem as acceptable...its down to them how they feel you are treating them...Mercer felt like he wasnt treated well and has left and other people witnessed it and didnt like it...and your response is to just call him a cry baby.
Sometimes things take a bit more energy and a bit more tact, like I said one thing I didnt like about this place in the past was some of the snobbery...some people argue it keeps the standards up..i thinknit actually closes off the minds of the people posting and those looking to understand more.

I do think that banter is one thing and it does seem, having done a fair few searches for research seems it's ways been here. I do think people have got a little personal here and when someone is clearly getting upset it's maybe not fair. I have mostly worked in environments where there can be a lot of pressure and have worked with people whose way of dealing with that can be very harsh banter and come from a cultural background where many people have a fairly cynical or ironic sense of humour. Fine for me but not everyone can deal with it.
I don't post many pictures because I only want to post what I'm fairly happy with and also need to figure out a better way of taking pictures. I view this thread as a tool to learn by observing what others are doing and then maybe adapting the odd thing I like and think will work for me.
I think there should be variety and there is room for the various interpretations be that business/ more formal wear, casual and even surf/ work wear and also the mod influence. But again I think variety is important even if you've a stricter personal ddress code.
I swear you taught Muhammed Ali to ramble or was that rumble... maybe it was the bit about being a butterfly?
After Bop's last my heart is pumping purple piss at the memory of the horriffic wounding remarks I think I directed at ol' Mercer, all because his jeans were too low and he looked a bit chubby in them. I say 'think' because it all seems like a nightmare now, I can't believe I could have said such nasty things. I see now that I should have told him he looked very nice, then I would have felt full of positive energy instead of how I feel now. I'm so upset that I can't go out for a drink now because I should stay in to make a collage out of vintage repp ties spelling out the word 'SORRY'. Well maybe I'll slip out to the pub for one first.........
Now who is looking like the cry baby? The knives were out for Mercer it was pretty clear
