I'm currently under-employed as america has stopped erecting buildings altogether, and would probably be happy to dumpsterdive for ivy rags on behalf of youse britishers and assorted other foreigners. the only thing on my wishlist is some trashed loake royals or 771t 's to wear in this evil midwestern weather, i cringe every time i leave the house in my good shoes (i know florsheims are superior but they don't work as casual attire, too pointey)

Shamrockmonkey I think we may do some business. (cue sound of hands rubbing together).
Seriously though, I would be happy to find things from over here that you need in exchange for vintage shirts from there. I'll PM you my size and wants list.
TW
I think this is an excellent idea.
Although the cost of postage from the U.S is very high at the moment, which has stopped me buying so much from the states.
i dont think the postage for shirts is too bad. shoes, coats, etc. are probably a different story.
When did J. Press only have branches in New Haven, Cambridge, and New York?

Its grim alright SM, just got back from a business trip to the UK, and our office there is inundated with high calibre construction engineers looking for work. England is certainly one of the most expensive countries to live in Europe, and yet, the rates for inspection engineers as an example, are the lowest in Europe, on par with China. And still there's not enough work to go around.
Its speaks volumes of the current malaise in Western democracy and capitalism when society devalues those who actually create wealth, research and talent, favouring the most academically and vocationally challenged i.e. the Big Brother household.
The BRICS are screwing us up the ass, and it won't be long before they are spunking in our mouths and playing S&M games with our children.
This is the destiny of our laissez-faire capitalism. Why are we fighting wars, when the elite is destroying us from within? Are we just going to take this shit? What are you going to do about it? Well, the first step is to get out of large corporations which are monoliths being destroyed through endless takeovers, down grading, de-engineering, out sourcing to Third-World shit holes and the search for Ponzi profit schemes.
The only institutions where loyalty still means and counts for something is the military, they yet may step into the void.
The revolution will not be televised.
This is the label I'm talkin about...somebody? anybody? Please?

No, I'm not an inspection engineer or inspector, I'm a qualified welding engineer engaged in engineering construction, risk based in-service inspection, lead auditor for capability and capacity pre-qualifications to the oil and gas industry, expert witness in court cases on vessel and pipework failures and as of 04-Jan the European manager of a successful engineering service provider.
Being involved in the hard graft of engineering, is obviously not as glamouress as working in a nancy-boy industry that you are no doubt pimping your ass in, but it has afforded me the honour of becoming a world citizen and living for extended periods in some rather interesting places including Singapore and Rio de Janeiro.
One does tire of telling stories to strangers in bars though......
After sifting through old J. Press ads for the better part of today: The San Francisco branch opened in 1968.

Yes, and my former co-workers at Brooks Bros. here told me it shut in 1987. I think it was somewhere on Post Street?
A year or two after this, BB itself was forced out of its original Beauxs-Arts SF building at the corner of Post & Grant and down the street into a rented 2 story space at 150 Post.

I'd add my bit, but it'd give me no satisfaction. im just going to laugh.
well put, hepcat.
Guys, I need your help on this one:
The Clarks shop only ships to UK/NI addresses, and I moved from London back home in September. So I basically need somebody who'd be willing to forward a pair of shoes for me, as I can't get my size in Germany (UK13 in these, they run awfully small on me).
I don't wanna harass people individually via PM, so I'll just put it on here, hoping somebody will help me out...
Cheers,
D

It is not society that devalues wealth creators. Plutocrats and large corporations have simply opened up markets to make even bigger profits at your expense.

Big money rules US politics and the US rules the UK.

The West has had its day. It is just a question of how low we sink. It is not easy to get out of large firms if they pay your wage. The great scandal is watching them outsource your kids' future jobs to the lowest bidder -the race to the bottom.
I would be very wary of recommending a military career. Total obedience is required and your life is on the line.
Well, we successfully hijacked and politcised this thread Shamrockmonkey and Kingstonian.

Hi I'm a bit of a noob and have been lurking and reading for a bit but thought I'd ask for some help with some clarifications. I'm trying to see the differentiation between trad, ivy and preppy. I have a basic understanding but I am not sure what the contemporary interpretations are as mostly these terms seem to reference the past very heavily.
Yes, let me enlighten you:
Trad: Storyville ragtime and 1917 era jazz. A musical idiom only, unrelated to fashion and clothing, except as a fictitious construct that exists only in the unreality of the internet.
Ivy: a noble art form practised by a seemingly disinterested, yet immaculate elite.
Preppy: the marketing of the above for financial gain, as an example, RL.

By George, you're on the money Mr. Cat.
I doff my topper to you,
Best,
STreety
Alright thanks for the clarification, not sure if the "immaculate elite" is the stylistically elite or the social elite. Is the Ivy style about elitism, status and or concerned with authenticity?

It's just a bit of heathy attitude to keep dem uppity Trads & Preppies in their place. They all cut corners & try to pass off their various revisions of the American style as being the real deal. A little research would put them straight - And we're here to encourage that!

Ivy is a gnostic heresy. That's all you need to know.
