All the talk on the Trad Am Clothes fora seems to be centered around the button down collars, especially about the sacred OCBD shirts...
Whenever I want to be that little bit dressier -not for Black Tie, of course- I always think about donning a tab collar shirt. They do not look as casual as button downs and not as stiff as, well, stiff collars and they go well with narrow ties... I always thought wide spread ones are only for wide ties with huge knots... my slim jim ties call for an OCBD or a tab collar...
This is not one of these threads that says: You can't wear BD with a tie, because it is a casual sport style of origin. I do not follow this argument. Once sports could be done in a tie as well...
I do not own a lot of them, most have point collars, one has a round collar, most are button cuff, one is French cuff...
I also like to wear a coloured (solid or striped) shirt with a white collar and cuff.
What are your opinions about tab collared shirts? What styles do you favour?
I ocassionally wore tab collars in college (Early 60's), always with a separate collar button, rather than self-fastening. I found them a bit of a bother, and also think that the tie you wear with them must make a small knot. Nothing wrong with them, to be sure-the Duke of Windsor was a fan.

According to Paul Keer's 'A Gentleman's Wardrobe' the rounded or Club tab collar was the prefered Ivy League style choice inspired by the DOW.
I'd own a bunch of these if it wasn't for my odd neck size.

When I did wear tab collars (early 60's) they were with a separate brass fastener for the tab. Had to be worn with the narrow ties of the time, with small knots.

^ ... Actually that's a pinned club, isn't it?
Where are me glasses?
Check out a particular Stetson advert - 'Stetson Stripes Up the Band' - the guy looks perfect: collar, size of knot, even the damn width of stripe. Oh, no one in England ever looked like that, surely?
A bit off topic:

I have become a big fan of tab collars when I need something more formal then a forward point or a button down. They seem to provide a similar look to that of a collar pin without having to mess with the pin. They also work well with older unlined ties because of the smaill knot required.
The collar is staying stiff because of either the collar stays or a heavy interlining in the collar. Remove the stays and you should be fine.
The interlining can't really be removed, it is most likely fused in there. It should soften with repeated laundering though.
What you could do is move the snap so that you have to pull the 2 tabs closer together when you snap it. That ought to pull everything tighter and make the collar appear softer.
