Passed by J.Simons shop window this evening and noticed a harrington jacket manufactured in England by Bramble, I,ve not seen one before.
Simular to the G9 , but with a smaller tarten check inside.
Looked very nice, and being that Baracuda harringtons are now becoming a bit to popular, a good alternative.
Anyone else know of this make?

Grenfell make them to the original G9 spec. - The one which Baracuta no longer use. JS had a hand in the design I think.
And I've yet to see them outside JS.
I want one Stone colour.
in Sale @ 89 english pounds.....

Hmm, that's what you get for not looking around properly. I was in there last week buying a Baracuda to replace the one I left on a train. It was a toss-up between the dark navy and the black (stone doesn't work for me) with the final decision going to the dark navy.
They had a very nice brown leather work coat with patch pockets and a grained finish, only my luggage allowance stopped me from buying it.
I need to get back up there again soon, work allowing. Any other random observations on the current stock?
Thanks -
J.
Edit: Wonder if that work coat was by 'Golden Bear'?
Edit II: This one is different but nice:

In what way is the cut of the Bramble G9 different from Baracuta's? Slimmer, shorter? I need another G9/G4 like a hole in the head but could always be persuaded......

So maybe the question simply is, in how far has the G9 changed since the 50s?!? I don't know the 50s ones, but I recently noticed a logo on the side pockets... I was not amused, but I guess, you can easily remove it....
In many years of collecting and later buying and selling vintage menswear I've NEVER come across a true vintage G9 in the flesh. Certainly not for lack of trying. I've been reliably informed that early 60's versions at least used a much finer cloth for the outer shell - almost a slight 'sheen' to the weave as it was described to me. Don’t know if that holds for the American versions during their Van Heusen licensing period too. I couldn't comment on possible differences to the cut I'm afraid. My father has a G9 which I would guess dates aback to early/mid 70's which is a dead ringer for the current model. For my money the worst thing about the current version (apart from their ubiquity and slightly naff more recent ltd. editions) is the chunky plastic zip! Why oh why? Doesn't anyone make metal ones any longer? Tsk, tsk.

I picked up a Bramble Harrington at J. Simons last week. Lovely indeed. Cotton seems a little thicker than the Baracuta, cut seems the same as the Baracuta but will do a comparison later today. After years of ordering items over the phone, it was my first actual visit to the shop and I wasn't disappointed. A real treasure trove, absolutely fantastic. Picked up a number of fabulous items and John and staff were lovely. Without a doubt the most exciting shop I have been to, left feeling genuinely exhilarated. Had to go back a week later!
Sorry I should have quoted Jesmond

None of my Baracuta G9 have plastic zips, including one bought quite recently. Plastic sounds horrible. The Grenfell/Bramble is very nice, cotton is slightly stiffer/thicker tan Baracuta's, cut is maybe a little looser. Great jacket indeed.
The internet is the new Millets :-

I have a bright red harrington and a green one. Both have metal zips. You do not have to buy a brand .
GRENFELL G9
I know what 'Grenfell Cloth' is.
Do these G9s have any connection with the cloth?
Contact info for the manufacturer and any pics please.
They're, however, only available at J. Simons and their website is down at the moment, but expected to be up again c. the week of Oct. 13th?
Grenfell make the Bramble.
Not seen them elsewhere.
Who's website is down? Not John's.
Will somebody please take a look at the Grenfell website and tell me: is it just my imagination or is that guy about to do something rude to that lady? Their coats are nice, but you have to razor the 'Grenfell' tag from the breast...
I have searched before but have never found a Grenfell website - do you have the address? Thanks
Hi Fred
You will see from this site that things at Grenfell are not what they used to be:

I am interested in Grenfell as well. I recently bought an almost new (old) Grenfell raincoat from a local Oxfam shop for £8.99. I took it to my tailor for some small adjustments and he confirmed it was the real thing. The lable proudly proclaims a Royal Warrant too. My coat is like the one depicted in stone but in midnight blue and a little shorter. The Japanese modern equivalent sells for about £300 I believe.
Not sure if this helps.......
