Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

Which brings about a new topic of discussion: is there an "ivy style" engagement ring?

Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

That's gonna look great with a decent tie and shirt,  Hardy and Johnson had a Marvest 3 patch in black/ dark brown houndstooth a while back,  but it was a 42XL,  hopefully I find the 41S version one day?

Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

Yeah I agree, a solid brown wool knit or earthy toned foulard with a white or royal cream oxford is gonna bring that out nicely... dig those shoulders though!

I was kind of bummed that the recent Hart Schaffner Marx turned out to be more structured than I'd like. It's okay and I'll probably get some wear out of it but the shoulders are a bit too padded.

Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

...got the shirt today and the collar was 16! I didn't ask the seller to measure it for me, I just assumed it was a 15½. I tried it on and it felt okey, like the other shirts I have, but I'm kinda worry of how it looks. I will upload a picture, so you can judge for yourself, later!

I don't tend to worry too much better shirt collars being half an inch here or there - frankly, few people in this world would even notice!

Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

With vintage shirts I've found that it's almost safer to err on the side of a size up.  With new shirts I typically wear a 14.5 collar, but on some vintage shirts, especially 100% cotton, I've found that after many years of washing the 14.5 collar has shrunk to where it's too small.  So often a 15 or even 15.5 is perfect.

Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

Yeah, but with tab collars it's kinda essential that they fit, atleast to me, since I will have it buttoned all the time, it's not like with other shirts, but we'll have to see. Will upload a picture when I get home.

/\ wear it to see the Pretty Things ... very "party at the Indian embassy" vibe!  also perfect for the next time you have to meet one of your agents at a curry house to receive the latest microfilm .....

Oliver,

If that doesn't work out for you drop me a line.  I may need another piece of stage attire.  Seriously.

Re: Recent Old Ivy Finds

Haha, okay will do man!

I'm gonna give it a go with several pieces and decide whether I'm brave enough. I'd been re-watching a lot of Ken Burns documentaries lately and seeing guys like Shirley Povich, Studs Terkel, George Plimpton, Shelby Foote, Charley McDowell, Daniel Okrent, etc. made me want to give up the bold and live out the rest of my days in soft toned down oxford cloth, solid shetlands and plain herringbone. Of course, I bought this four days later... smile

I'll let you know in a couple of days whether I can pull it off!

Just saw that jacket after clicking on the thread and having noticed you were last to post in here AC...  Do you think we need to get you a paper bag to take deep breaths into?

No.  He needs to just get over his little tummy ache and embrace the prints like a real man!
