Re: Quality of Crepes

Whoooa, Im lovin em Weej! Now that looks like the original 'sand' color lookin at the front gives me the notion this is who RJ Colt copied their version after. Thats funny bcuz I've been waitin for the mailman to come then when I drove up the block he was coming down, I pulled him over and said you gotta box for me,he said yep. I proceeded to get the shoes slip em on and bingo my outfit was complete just in the nick of time so, congrats on your timing. Man those things are beautiful especially the color any idea what era they came from? I definitely gotta get a pair of something, I think I'll scan ebay until I get lucky. Whew! Man they look better every time I peep at em watta' jewel!

Re: Quality of Crepes

Thanks guys, for the props. I feel really lucky to have picked up such a great pair. I've asked the seller to tell me when he bought them...

When I get some more time I'll post some more images of them in detail for the record on this thread.

Re: Quality of Crepes

From Playboy heaven to playboy hell in jsut 48 hours.

Wore the PBs into town today as I was going with Mrs Weejun to Oliver Goldsmith in Notting Hill to order some bespoke sunglasses for her birthday (worthy of another post that) and was walking in Kensington Gardens soaking up the sunshine when I felt something like an elastic band snapping underfoot.

Sure enought the foxing on the inside of the right foot had split away from the rolled welt and vertically too. By the time I got home the San Andreas fault had nothing on the cracks in the sole, from right to left under the foot pad.

I had already come to the conclusion that the ebay seller was telling porkies 'designed by Paul Smith' although it was feasible that Smith could have sold them in the late 80s early 90s, but they really are at least 40 years old I'm certain and the leather is real antelope buck not nubuck. I asked the seller to tell me when he bought them but had no response. He probably thinks I'd want to return them.

Anyway, there is now an urgent need to visit Trickers and see if they can resole these babies.

I'll post pictures later.

'66 - did any of your old ones crack?

EDIT - searched online and found your old thread for putting them in the oven, Damn I should have done that first. Do you think it will help heal those cracks underfoot?

Re: Quality of Crepes

^ Ouch!

Cracking could be irreversible, though I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps you can make the rubber bond again just using heat and pressure.

I've cracked some soles on Irish Wallabees that had become rock hard... trying the oven treatment didn't "glue" the cracked ends back together but it did help soften up the soles which were fine after that. No further cracking since.

I'd throw them in the oven for sure... be gentle and good luck.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Well, I just tried the oven trick , in foil, not for too long and at low heat. Took a rubber mallet to the them and repaired the split foxing just by hitting them gently! Makes sense. On Thursday I was talking to John Rushton about the Tecnic playboys we bought from John Spencer in 1990, made for Clarks Japan, and he remembered them saying that the foxing was all put on by hand with hammers.

Remembering George Cox's post here too, I could see where the foxing had come away that it was simply attached to a welt of crepe stitched directly onto the edge of the uppers, so the construction obviously used the bonding properties of crepe to actually hold the foxing on to the shoes

The heat was very low when they came out of the oven, but I think that more heat could definitely help to repair the cracks. Don't have a blow torch or anything similar though, so may have to use the oven again but for longer...

Was it rubber cement that you used, as that guy described?

Re: Quality of Crepes

sorry to hear about those cracks in the soles, but there is another part and it is the heel that start to peel off at the back, and happens when you are driving, especially when driving long distance and in combination with heat. If you are going to drive dont wear your playboys, bring your sneakers and let your sneakers do the driving and let your playboys do the walking.

Re: Quality of Crepes

yeah, maybe one of those. will be hard to aim the heat though, shield the leather part with something. was thinking a little cheap propane torch might work if the flame was turned down to where its yellow (this will cause the tip to overheat, be careful). id guess it'd toast them like creme brulee though, id try on a pair destined for the trash first.

i still think the soldering iron (or even a curling iron) might be the best bet though. i remember reading somewhere that doc martens used to recommend "hot knifing" the soles to repair them, which in turn led to miscreants filling the air pockets with contraband and knifing them shut for smuggling purposes. not sure if those are natural rubber or polyurethane but still seems like it might wiork the best-heat is more focused on the damaged part, not as much risk of damaging the rest of the sole, etc.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Yeah heating a knife blade and sliding it into the cracked part was another thing I thought of. Also the underground shoemakers on 66s forum say that rubber cement will stick crepe organically so I'll buy some and try that first as the least destructive method.

(BTW, has anyone else noticed that this thread and photos are translated into german by someone almost entirely and posted on a forum called the Scene?)
