Re: Quality of Crepes

You like em , eh 1966!????

Yes, i absolutely agree with you ILG that the George Cox Playboy style suede chukkas can come really clumpy looking aswell as coming closer looking to the McQueenish silhouette like your ones above.

The ones above look like mine did when i first bought them from the Japanese husband and wife clothes/shoe designer team at the Old Curiosity Shop near Lincolns Inn Fields around two years ago.I dont think they sell them there anymore but i may be wrong...

These are NOT the Goodyear Welted Original- Playboy label Playboy chukka boots (which are no longer made at present).I would think GBX shoes copied this GC Playboy style boot shape for their sneaker type Playboy boots.(I telephoned GC in Northampton and got the low down on the history etc of GC made Playboys from the GC designer who used to be pictured on their website adjacent to the GC scion/Director.He claimed to be unaware that a company called GBX was calling their suede chukkas Playboys and seemd a little put out).

I really don`t think the manufacture of these boots that ILG and myself bought went downhill although i have seen some online webstores selling shoddy and clumpy looking GC thick crepe soled chukkas. I bought my own primarily for aesthetic reasons and haven`t been disappointed. My own GC Playboy style boots (first pair) are still going strong.

I bought 2 pairs of the GC boots because it appeared they were going out of business but they merely closed a factory.George Cox still make the Original Playboy label suede chukkas (now in Spain) for the Playboy footwear  company. The Swedes bought the name from GC many years back.

^ "MADE IN EN-" ... indeed.

Jesmond mate since you're listening (and I'm sincerely humbled) it's all about the slightly less chunky soles for me.
I still haven't worn those Barkers, although I do like looking at the big fuck off numbers. What a shoe eh?

Re: Quality of Crepes

A mate is selling a brand new pair of purple Sanders chukkas (rebranded to Davanzati for the US market), for much less than the brown ones.
They are a UK size 9, if anyone wants them give me a shout.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Hello 1966
I'm new to this forum a so please bear with me. I've been searching high and low
for a genuine pair of Playboys. My first pair were purchased in 1972. Saving  all
my money for weeks to spend $30.00 US Dollars on a pair of low top black suede
"Playboys". I remember the tiniest details of the shoe(the tiny British flag sewn inside, the specific stitch patterns and the piping between the suede top and the rubber sole). These shoes were the ones to wear back in my teen years. And God forbid you had the audacity to wear an imitation pair. You would've been crucified by your buds. They came in all different styles; lace up, slip on, buckle, low and high top, leather, suede, patent leather, all colors even two tone. But what was persistent throughout was the quality of these shoes. That's why when I saw the pic you posted of your brown low top suedes I knew I had to register and find out where you purchased these.
The GBX type is ok( I have a pair of brown suede high tops) but the soles are not the crepe of the original and the suede is not of high quality. I found pictures of the shoe on the J.Simmons (they appear to be the originals)web site but no way of ordering a pair.

Re: Quality of Crepes

The ones on the J. Simons site are the Sanders version - also available at Citishoes in NYC.  J. Simons used to also carry the Original Playboys but has stopped - or at least only had a couple of sizes left last year...........I have 3 pairs of the Sanders version and am very happy with the quality.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Welcome to the forum The Bronx.

I found those old tobacco brown low top Playboys on Ebay, the seller was in the United Kingdom. I hadn't seen them before, and later I discovered this forum and I was thrilled to find scattered bits of information about these shoes. The story of these is a puzzle we are solving together bit by bit, and it's great to have you on board and hear your experiences with them - the slip ons and buckled versions are all new to me. Great stuff.

These have always been a bit of a "cult" shoe, worn by groups as diverse as the Teds in post war Britain to the NY hip hop kids late 1970s. Needless to say there have been many versions over the years. According to our fellow member The Weejun, my low top pair should be from the late 1950s. Apparently his dad wore these same ones in London back then. What's really good: Weejun is now looking into reproducing a small run of the old model Playboys.

Fred is right, the Sanders on the J. Simons site are probably a different model than the ones you remember. They are very nice though, a well built shoe with a pointier toe. I have a pair myself and I can really recommend these. Still, I'm always on the look out for older or different pairs - addictive shoes these.

Re: Quality of Crepes

Fred
I checked out the links for the Sander pair and although they are an excellent looking shoe they are not the originals. They are missing the piping that's found between the upper and the sole. You do see the piping on the Larger boots they sell but its not really seperated from the sole material, like what is found in 1966 pics of his brown pair. note the stitching also. But maybe I'll change my mind when I pay Citishoes a visit.
Thanks for the info regarding J.Simons

Re: Quality of Crepes

I've been on numerous sites that reference the playboy shoe and the cool stories of "back in the day". You hit it on the head 1966 its a puzzle. I can remember that at the time there was one storeon the corner of Forham Rd. and the Grand Concourse that carried them and they were displayed prominently in all the styles I mentioned. They were so popular back then that other stores began selling poor imitations. These were and still are awesome shoes comfortable and can look good with jeans as well as dress pants.

I wish Weejun luck(make sure he uses yours as the model ....)
