Etta blows my mind. Her stuff on the Chess box set is brilliant. I really need to pick up a decent compilation of her stuff. Any recommendations?

I've got the Chess set but after the first run through all I ever play now is "I'd Rather..."

Anybody else?

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

Chris, the compliment is appreciated. The Chess set is a pleasure on a variety of levels. While I love all the obvious stuff (Muddy Waters et al.), there are some happy surprises, especially the Dale Hawkins stuff.

A little bit of Howling Wolf (backdoor man) for everyone even if the men don't understand.

Im out to make it with my midnight dream, yeah
cause Im a back door man, the men dont know
But the little girls understand, all right, yeah
You men eat your dinner, eat your pork and beans
I eat more chicken, than any man ever seen, yeah, yeah

The temperature is back down here. For you Sun Never Sets types, the great (tongue-in-cheek) fake mod anthem:
The Sussed "I Got Me Parka"
(Why hasn't anyone posted this stuff?)

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

Yesterday was Family Day in Canada (or as my girlfriend calls it, given its rather sissy name "Flowers and Kittens Day"), so the girlfriend and I snuck out a road trip to the US for the day. We had lots of time for road music, since the border delay on the way down was an hour and four+ f'ing hours on the way back.

Mostly Chess but there is a miracle buried in there.

Vince Taylor, "Brand New Cadillac"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZjmmdQcoaY

Dale Hawkins, "Suzy Q"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LX2wIs7DsyM

Etta James, "Stop the Wedding"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOhdMs0Ivzo
Wait, Wait STOP the wedding
You're just marrying her for spite
If she knew the inside story
She'd tell you what you're doing just aint right
I know you dont wanna hurt me
So stop this madness before it starts
Revenge will only cause you regret
So dont do it, dont do it
Dont break two hearts

Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, "Shop Around"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YPdVqwk978
hen I became of age my mother called me to her side
She said 'son you're growing up now, pretty soon
You'll take a bride'...

[Sings:]
And then she said...
'Just because you've become a young man now
(Man, now)
There's still some things that you don't understand now
(Son, now)
Before you ask some girl for her hand now
(My son)
Keep your freedom for as long as you can now'
My mama told me...'you better shop around'
(Shop, shop around) a-whoa-yeah
You better (uh-huh) shop around!

And if only, if only I could find Muddy Waters, "Put a Tiger in Your Tank" on youtube
"I have no money in the bank,
I wanna put a tiger in your tank"
Hard to think of a song that is more of a driver.

Definitely how I felt when I looked down at the GPS and saw that I was only half-way across the bridge back to Canada.
Del Shanon, "Cry Myself to Sleep"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAN-GFnBWBQ
Did you notice how she danced with every guy but me
She loves to me in misery
I used to be her little buttercup
But now she comes around to break me up

The parties over everybody go home,
I'm sorry 'Id like to be alone,
C'os every time I see her I have to weep
I'm gonna cry myself to sleep

HBH,

I was floored by your past song pic post (solid, solid stuff).

Stop the Wedding is hilarious. There is no doubt that it's a wrencher; however, Etta's ultra sincere "STOP. STOP THE WEDDING" is so loud that you can't help wonder if Etta has perhaps made a mistake in figuring out why this guy is going out w/ someone else. Also, the spoken introduction is a gas.

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

Yes, definitely a great song! I love it, and not just in a "that's too much" way, but I also love it for its intensity... sure, the introduction is a gas, indeed!!!

I got the 45 for "Stop the wedding", and I didn't buy it for the flip... it's just a nice bonus...

We should do a "Talk Ivy Weekend" with lunchtime clothes and records exchange, concerts in the evening, and maybe an allnighter... If you guys still can make it midnite to six, that is....

Re: Groovin' at the I Spot -

Or perhaps that is not such a cool idea...

as long as there's not a female ivy style group, it might be a little bit like some veteran boy scouts meeting...

There should be girls like her:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK7cKUNw … re=related

Meeting people from the internet is a little strange, anyway...

So I guess, that Weekend is a only a nice little internet fantasy..

If I really had to organize something like that, I would only use the net to spread the word, of course, but I wouldn't tie it to an online-community....

Okay, a few extras today.

Who likes their R&B/rock instrumentals a little bit nasty, a little bit saxy and a bit aggressive?

This video is absolutely bonkers. Listen to the dog calls in the background and enjoy the go go dancers.

This is the scene at my ideal club, by the by
