Straw Hats and Summer Gear

On a recent trip to Guatemala I forgot my trusty Orioles ballcap (nothing like a good East Coast team that's not the Sox or Yankees), and I got a nice sunburn, particularly on my scalp (thinning hair sucks). I bought a straw boater/fedora type hat at a local market, and it actually looks half-decent on me. But one does one wear it with? Since it was a casual vacation, I got away with jeans and a polo shirt, but in the city I'd like to dress it up a bit more. I'm thinking a linen madras shirt and some shorts? Can anyone recommend some good shorts as well. What are my options beyond the usual khaki, without going into the dreadful "Trad" arena.

There's a place just round the corner from my house, a kind of clothing warehouse catering largely to the over 60s.

I had a rake round there yesterday and picked up, along with a couple of other things, an Italian made straw trilby, properly sized. It cost about as much as a sandwich.

Old boy style here I come. Outtamyway whippersnappers!

Not on in England.  Bowls, the insistence on being a "character", chairmanship of the local Conservative Association, a wifey who does lovely cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.  My wife even objects to me wearing an old Viyella Tattersall shirt - my 'old man's' shirt.  No, not on at all, sorry.

Re: Straw Hats and Summer Gear

Hats are too dangerous to wear in England.  Take a wrong turning and a mob of shell suited, gangsta rap speaking chavs are likely to ask the profound question, "What are ya' wearin' that for, a joke like? Dickhead!" Before beating you senseless and posting the event on Youtube.

Highly inflammable shell suits are an evolutionary sartorial deadend, but not on certain estates in Hull, Manchester, Bootle and Ellesmere Port.

Women don't understand Viyella shirts, or anything in Tattersall, that's why you must wear them.  The 20% wool is not my favourite mix, better than the Ben Sherman 20% polyester itch, but ofcouse, the function of this is to keep you warm in the stately home that you can't afford to heat.

If they have your size & quality isn't too much of an issue for you then Landsend can be well worth a look. Functional Ivy.

Careful now lads. Don't say anything negative about Strawberry Girl. We don't want a repeat of Ivy girl gate.

Besides I think those hats are perfectly darling...
