Philby was a charmer, Burgess probably less so, and Blunt less than Burgess (by my reckoning).  But Kim was dangerous.  The Costello book is the best.

Alex

They're just clothes. Of course they have 'meaning' in some senses of that word. Attaching more meaning to them than any chattel should have in the search for personal and societal identity is drifting from the shore of reason in my opinion.

It's probably true to say that habitues of forums such as this take more of an interest in clothing than the average person and that's great. I love reading the views of many posters here when the talk is solidly of specifics. I have a problem when people try to spin a manifesto out of a habit or a compulsion.

Re: "The Look" ...

To get back on track I'd like to say that the outfit I mentioned earlier in this thread could be described as dressed up terrace fashion perhaps. Others would call it fooling around with designer gear which is fine too. All that matters is that I'm convinced I look the part in a get-up like that. However, such an outfit ( as stated ) bears no relation to The Look we're speaking of here. The only string attached in this case is that people being otherwise into classic schmutter enjoy wandering a bit, sartorially.

I do think one can sport modern outfits that do remain within those boundaries of a TNSIL related look, more or less. For instance I rate a lot of those modern 1/4 zip sweaters a lot ( CP among others does some really good ones with subtle detailing. Dress 'em up w/a good shirt, dress down w/a good tee underneath ). Those teamed with, say, some modern classic 5 pocket ( think APC or YMC here  ) and a pair of classic trainers could lead to a satisfactory result. Obviously one could look pretty fashionable wearing the 'right' trainers, chinos ( probably TH or Gant ) and some cotton sweatshirt w/a bit of class. As always it's about balance and co-ordination. It really shouldn't be that hard to do a modern version of The Look. It's all about imagination and 'having an eye' for that sort of thing. Thanks for reading and to be continued I suppose....

Re: "The Look" ...

I'm sorry my original post was directly after yours Alex. I wasn't referring to your comments, rather the topic as a whole.

Sightings of the disaffected urban philosopher make me nervous. When he's accompanied by his "sussed" older brother I reach for the shotgun.

John Gall talks about a similar thing - Being a Modernist/Stylist/Whatever, but not in any obvious badge-wearing way.

I'm off to sew another beer towel on me Parka now, laters.
