Fantastic.

Permission to reprint on The Weejun?

I guess it makes absolute sense as crepe is just natural latex and heat softens it.

^ Bien sûr.

Perhaps I'll edit it a bit and add some pics? I have a pair of Dessies coming my way that may need the treatment.

Re: '66's shoe hack: Cookin' Crepes

Maybe a mix of the oven and the hot knife technique inside the cracks could cure them? Worth a go. I'm just not sure that Trickers have the ability to rebuild those goodyear welted playboy soles these days. We'll see.

Re: '66's shoe hack: Cookin' Crepes

i used the oven technique on a couple of pairs of deadstock Clarks, probably 5 yrs old, that had gone rock solid. required much longer than stated in the thread, and hotter - at least 'the lowest setting' presumably refers to a gas oven? 50C on an electric oven didn't do anything, think i had it up to about 100 or 120 before they softened (although i don't have an over thermometer, the dial could be way off at the low end)

^ Yeah mine's a gas oven. I was being careful in that tutorial, I have tried more heat myself with good results. Just be careful not to toast the leather.

Re: '66's shoe hack: Cookin' Crepes

I wonder if an electric heat gun as used for stripping varnish from wood etc. would work - perhaps using tin foil as a heat shield?

Thank you for the tip, 66.  We've got one of these fan ovens that just about takes your head off at high temperatures.

Keep it low. They might need a bit longer than the 3 minutes I mentioned.

Re: '66's shoe hack: Cookin' Crepes

tinfoil i dont think would be a particularly good heat shield. conducts the heat too much. might even be counterproductive. the best heat shield ive found, as good as industrial ones or better, is drywall (dunno what its called there. plasterboard? wallboard?) Just dont cook the gypsum dust into the sole.

If Talk Ivy had a Greatest Hits album, this would be track one, side one.
