Re: The long march away from the Spirit of '69

Please, gentlemen, note the name of the posting:  THE LONG MARCH AWAY.

I'm pleased GG said it first.  GG was not, however, long out of short trousers when I was discovering myself (LOL) at Eric's in the summer of 1978, and seems to have become a 'mod monk' PDQ, rightfully despising the odious Pete Burns for sneering at his, GGs, youthful discovery of modern jazz - Hubbard, Dexter Gordon - hence wisely IMO turning his back on the trendy post-punk shite of that time: between Johnny Rotten and Boy George (e.g.).  I was finding my way in via Montgomery Clift and Graham Marsh's Blue Note covers book, which my Dad has had for yonks.

Okay.

The long march is away from boots and braces and racist aggro and the taking of ends in a modernist direction.  That means all the things GG holds dear, as far as I know what they are.  It means Le Corbusier, Jonathan Miller and Jimmy Guiffre, Italian coffee and the Italian male.  No, this is not a dig at anyone, it is nothing more than memories of what life was like between 1970 and 1980, when some of us were doing our growing up.  Just because I have short hair it does not mean I am a 'sussed skin' - it means I'm getting old and losing it (but it ain't shaved off, okay?)  I don't wear Harringtons, Freds, Ben Sherman, Sta-Prest, a crombie, Levis, red socks or big boots.  I wear wingtips, loafers, chukka boots, dessies, Sebago.

Some people are going to have to take a closer look at the history of the forum before mouthing off.

Let me add this:

I don't believe that skinhead as most people visualise the style and Ivy/Modernism are truly compatible.  I do believe, however, that there was a small number of young men - 'peanuts' or 'spy kids' if you will - who were visually exciting and open to ideas and change.  They were perhaps the first to take a look in 'Squire's' shop window.

Re: The long march away from the Spirit of '69

I organised a club night with soul and jazz upstairs and a ska/tamla room downstairs. A lot of time and money went into this event which was ruined by a dozen 40 year old skins who turned up.
They bullied the other punters, made racist and sexist remarks against the staff and ended up fighting with the doormen. They told me to stop playimg jazz as it was 'wog' music and then demanded ska(!) These were grown men who really should have known better. Take off your rose coloured glasses. This is the face of skinheadism in the 21st century i'm afraid.

I would love to say a few of the skins tried to stop all the trouble but pack mentality kicked in and they went bonkers. Of course i'm not saying every skinhead behaves in this way but the sussed ones really seem to be in the minority. It's sad because they can have a lot of style.

The mods were frightened to scuff their suede or disturb their Marriots. And the jazzers thought it was all 'too heavy...'

I do have a bit of a jaundiced view of our shaven headed chums. I suppose I just need to meet more cool people like yourself Suited to get the other side of the coin...

Re: The long march away from the Spirit of '69

Too much philosophy and too much attention to books.

Most of the 1969 customers in Squire Shop and Ivy shop were not into jazz or existentialism.

They wanted the shirts and the shoes. They were not best mates with the owner and he was not their mentor.

They were conservative(with a small c) youngsters from the suburbs who liked to have good time at the weekend and look smart. They had certain tastes in music.

For the most part they were not violent or trouble makers.
