Re: Loafers

My other pair of loafers are Florsheim Yumas, a classic venetian loafer. They're beautifully shaped, almost an 'almond toe' and they look good with a fuller cuff.

Sebago are well thought of by people whose judgement I'd trust.

Re: Loafers

I understand John Rushton's 'Lormoc' brand is manufactured by some vestiges of what used to be Sebago USA; certainly the models look like Sebagos of the recent past.

The current Sebago offering is OK as far as it goes, but it's been my experience that all these offshore-made loafers don't actually 'age' at all. This is certainly true of the current Docksides and recent models of the Bean blucher mocc. All attempts to impart some character to the shoes are stubbornly resisted by the hides used.

Re: Loafers

Beefrolls need some THUMP I think. That's why the Bass beefroll doesn't quite work when compared to the Sebago Classic.

I'm with H. on the lines though. Less is more.

Early USA made Cole Haans were an Ivy Shop / Ian Strachan favourite, then came Sebago Classics for loafers.

I liked the Lormocs very much from every point of view (style, quality, price, etc) when I was last in John Rushton's dropping off a vintage Sero for The Weejun. Worth a punt, IMO. I first heard of them from Chris_H.

I like the Fairmount & Finsbury offerings from France too and AE Kenwoods from Krantz, Drury Lane.

Is it true that the people who make the current Sebagos down in El Salvador also make the current El Salvador LL Bean Classic loafers (Not that they look anything like each other)?

Re: Loafers

Russell and Bromley carry some Sebago "Hand sewn" loafers and they look nice to me, nice leather without the high shine that you get on Weejuns etc these days. I think they might be my next pair of loafers......though I'm open to being tempted by other makes. I do like the Tan Lormoc, but only seen a pic not the real thing.

Not seen the Fairmount, Finsbury stuff

Re: Loafers

I confess to lack of knowledge as to what a beefroll is...sounds like an uncut version of pot roast to me!

I wear Weejuns at least several times a week.  Work, dates, anything that doesn't involve strenuous exercise or muddiness or sand.   Finally got Alden tassels for my last birthday.  I would like a pair of horsebit loafers as well.

Re: Loafers

Horsebits come from 'WASP' & 'Preppy'...

Not Ivy.

They're later in the U.S. & not a part of the 'classic' look.

Re: Loafers

I just like them. And I'd buy the Italian ones, most likely.

As for brand loyalty to weejuns, its more appearance loyalty than brand loyalty.  I just like the way they look.  The higher-end idea is interesting, however, I might feel less inclined to wear really 'good-quality' weejuns as much as I wear the current ones.  I can afford to buy some very nice things, but not yet (if ever) to beat the shit out of very nice things.
