Peters, Derby and Catalina jackets

What's the difference between them?  A bit of Googling reveals little of interest other than that Peters jackets were worn by certain American JDs.  I bought one, for next to nothing, said to be from the late 50s, and it certainly makes a nice (cotton) alternative to a G9.  I know we've had a thread on zippered jackets in general, but all contributions on this particular subject would be gratefully received.  hey seem no more Ivy League than, say, a bowling shirt - more classic 'Americana' - but very acceptable for the price.

I'm afraid the technical know-how is lacking, but examples of the Peters jacket can be found by Googling, then finding the 'Grits' thread.

Grits? Like wannabe tough guys? My dad always used that word to describe certain types of older guys who hung on to their "outlaw" persona a little too long. If it's the same thing I think I know the jacket you are referring to.

Re: Peters, Derby and Catalina jackets

That Grits thread is fascinating.

As for the jackets they seem to be an example of what I've always referred to generically as a 'golf jacket'. Literally dozens of manufacturers made them as both leisurewear and liveried workwear in various thicknesses of cotton or poly/cotton shell. Peters would appear be one such maker and I'm guessing the preference for Peters' jackets might be regional. London Fog made a similar jacket for decades and I always seemed to have at least one on the go for cutting about in. A shriftshop staple.

Far more practical than a Baracuta: machine washable with no knitted parts and only partially lined.

The wonderful 1966 has posted pictures of Clint in 'The Eiger Sanction' wearing something very similar to my Peters.

The 'Varsity Catalina' just turned up in the mail.  It's far more padded than the 'Peters', more of a mid-autumn jacket.  Different in detailing: knitted collar, cuffs and waist, but the seam is positioned slightly differently and is slightly more pronounced.

Re: Peters, Derby and Catalina jackets

The jury is in on the two jackets.  IMO the Peters 'Derby' (if that is an accurate description) is by far the cooler of the two.  This looks, to my way of thinking, more like the jacket worn by Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood in pictures posted by 1966.  The 'Varsity Catalina' is more like the kind of generic leisure wear Kingstonian sometimes comments upon.  The main problem for me is the zipper, which is too chunky by far - almost like a bivouac, as Paddy once said of Bill's Khakis - 'total schtick'.  As it was only just over £6, however, I'm not complaining too much.  The Peters is definitely going to be the more practical alternative to the G9: nice lightweight cotton, subtle detailing.  The Catalina is thick poplin, to be stored now for the autumn.

Does anyone know how to put pictures on here?
I have several pictures of the Catalina varsity, S.F. Derby and the Catalina LaPaz jackets. With those pictures I could show you the difference
between this great jackets.

Re: Peters, Derby and Catalina jackets

Hello, I have tried several times to upload pictures of the catalina and S.F. Derby jacket but I only get: an internal server error has occured, please try again later. This is really too bad because I want to share pictures of the jackets with other fans. The jacket you see in my small picture is of a navy blue Catalina Varsity jacket. Catalina, California U.S.A. made these jackets until around 1982 I believe. They also made a lighter jacket called The Original LaPaz by Catalina. This where more of a spring and summer jacket. I hope that I will be able to upload some photoes later, it is easier to use photoes to show the difference between these jackets than just words.
