Ivy League to his fingertips (and his wingtips), this gentlemanly Democrat brought renewed prosperity to Europe, via the Marshall Plan. Without him, no economic kick-start for Italy - so probably no cinema other than neo-realist, no Agnelli, Vespa or furniture design. Without him, no social and economic revolution in England. No affluence, no youth culture, no cheap and affordable clothing, no Carnaby Street. No Elizabeth David, Terence Conran, 'Blow Up', Bond, Bailey or Hockney.
