That's a good reference! Adam, you should get the "Blue Note Cover Art" book. Or someone should scan (at least) the essay (+ the other page with the clothes) for this forum... It's really a great book, anyway! And you probably won't find all of the original records...
The more I consider Gibson Gardens' line of attack and reasoning, the more appealing I find it.
Oh, he and I don't see eye to eye on everything. He seems to have taken something of a linear approach to the concept of Modernism which is at odds with my more organic, conservative stance.
But the narrow, specific, really quite zealous attitudes expressed above are probably only a sampling of the man's personality. I admire very much the self-sufficient, anti-peacocking, asexual approach. That requires guts in a young man at the peak of his sexual life. We were desperate to attract women - and they knew it.
This is a side of Ivy that, IMO, requires further exploration.

Is it truly a side of Ivy a such though, this asexual thing ? I have to say I find this very hard to believe, after all we're talking just a small band of people ( The Mod monks as I recall ). So it may have been a bit of a cultish thing ( to a degree ) in London, back in the day, but most certainly nothing more than that. A bit of a stretch to say the least IMO....

Well, certainly, Alex, I'm not trying to claim it as anything but a minority thing. No less interesting for all that. In fact, I had thought GG had been referring to the state of play re MM back on Merseyside. I guess I was mistaken.

Merseyside yes ( Scousers not knowing what to do with their sausages ? ) re MM, same attitude nevertheless so I thought I use the reference, Andy.....

Americans talk about this 'asexual' thing too. The downplaying of secondary sexual characteristics or somesuch...
Can I suggest that GG (& / or MM) can be accomodated here? And could I further observe that we're actually lucky to have him post here whenever he does.
- Hate him / love him all you want, but I have to say, yet again, that for my generation and location he is THE ONE.
I'll expand if you wish, but please do believe me that he is very important to all of this.
Ian Strachan also talks of him in the highest terms... If IS means anything to you.
- Just floating the idea here...

Ivy Icon: Wally Cox
I meant no disrespect to anyone in particular, people. I just wanted to make clear ( as if you didn't know ) that I can't be fed what I regard as bollocks. Simple as that and end of story. No offence again, just my harmless opinion ( take it or leave it )....

Ah, it's only a way of moving in a slightly different direction, Alex - a means of raising the level of debate if at all possible. Take it or leave it!!

I can see that, Andy. I should perhaps not have bothered but I am used to speaking my mind when I feel the urge. Sometimes it's better to simply stay out of the kind of discussion that isn't for you though and I'm even more used to doing that, so I'll leave it indeed. Cheers,
A
I'm kind of playing with all this now on The Fine Line thread...
How do we get the best from people with whom we might not personally agree?
They can have valuable input too, mixed in with the way in which they might choose to present themselves.
- It's a tricky one!

Great pic Staceyboy. This represents my fave "Ivy" style look.
Interesting to note that it's a maturer model being used. Wonder how that related with the "youthful" mod ideal of the time when we think of "Ivy's" influence on that style.
Wish Cecil Gee was stocking that stuff back in the 70's, or then again I would have walked straight past it, called it old fashioned and plumped for the sidepocket, brushed denim Brutus jeans!!!
the patch chest pocket is an absolutely smashing detail that i cant seem to find, anywhere, besides on a number that had been completely consumed by moths... bring it back!
I thought this was well worth bumping, for a number of reasons. Disappointed over a Blacker sack during the summer of 2010. Not my size, unfortunately.
Gibson Gardens at his finest here. Newbies may not recognise some of those involved in the, ah-hem, debate.
Oh, and, yes, the blazer remains fantastic.

I was such a wanker about that...
I find that our dear Gibson Gardens becomes more and more of an 'ivy icon' to me. His look and ideas make him one to behold.
Take notice, minions...
The living and the learning. We should all be following Adam's example.

At the end of this month Mr. John Simons will be able to help you out with THE Blazer.
All Ivy details available by retail.
It is perhaps timely, then, to bring this thread back.

Hope they vary the colour from the prototype. I won't be getting it if it only comes in the black.
Was that not an incredibly dark Blue in a rather heavy fabric?
My eyes...
The fabric is to be changed along with the button stance and as for the colour... Dunno.
I have a slim Brooks Bros silk knit tie from my first trip to the 346 in '85 of a similar dark, dark Navy... If indeed that's what the JS Blazer was.
We shall see what's what soon.
You're right it was blue, but so dark it may as well have been black.
Paul mentioned that they might do a few suits with the same style jacket and high waisted trousers. Now that's something I like the sound of.

no, the style councillor was a wanker...
As Kingstonian noted, Style Councillor offered a contrarian view of John Simons. He was brash, sure, but we can take a little brashness, can't we? Otherwise we might as well scrap 'Talk Ivy' and join John's minions over on Arseaboutfacebook, telling us about stadium boots. Anyway: not the point. Adam has since had a chance to chew the fat etc. with GG. It's a sign of intelligence to learn from experience and change your mind, isn't it?
Thanks for bumping that. My favourite Gibson rant / rage of a bruised romantic. And I think he is someone with romance in his soul. How could he not be?
Yes, I think that's when and where I learned to love him. The forum at its best IMO.
