What's Your Tipple?

Just curious on what you guys sup on when you wanna kick back and relax...

When I'm indoors I like nothing better than 12 year old Macallan on the rocks.

When I'm out and about in a bar I start with a few beers, preferably Peroni, or Red Stripe. Then I move onto the Vodka and Soda.

On a hot summers day I crave an ice cold beer, like a Coronita, and sometimes a pear flavor Kopparberg...

I'm dry, bro'.  I had a drink problem before leaving school and now avoid it like the plague.

Classic cocktails are my staple; Martinis, Manhattans, Margeritas, Daiquiris, Sidecars. Very fond of vodka Gibsons at the moment.

Beer need not be expensive but cold, my Scotch is Grouse - always neat. And fruity Spanish brandy never goes amiss.

The Mojito has been big with me, down here, this Summer, so far.

I like 'em with bite. Sugar light.

I will have sangria and margaritas in the summer. I'll even have a frozen margarita if I'm with several girls. I had a good white wine sangria the other night.

Re: What's Your Tipple?

Ah, mentioning alcohol brings FNB himself to the sub-forum....

I'm very boring: if it's a pub, I just drink beer, all the time (bitter or Pils usually), in a nightclub just water or orange juice (without alcohol), I can't stand people with beer bottles and ciggies on the dancefloor, and in a restaurant it's a nice wine (white or red depending on the food)...

.....real "drinks" only occasionally! I like Scotch, but I don't say no to a Bourbon once in a while, when I'm with my father, I might drink a Cognac or a Calvados, in my favourite bar they always wanna give me what I had christened a "wet clit"... it's simply vodka and soda, half and half, with an optional slice of lime.... usually Polish vodka (Grasovka?)...

Re: What's Your Tipple?

I'm an unreconstructed lager lout when in the pub - Kronenbourg being my favourite. Reminds me of good times in Paris I think. Draught usually but not saying no to a bottle if necessary. Used to love Stella in my youth but I really don't like the taste of it now. Saying that, I used to enjoy many a real ale when out with my ex-father in law years back. I have a catholic taste in spirits (the Holy Ghost??) and like a Tanquerey (sp?) Gin and tonic when in the mood or straight whiskey when I'm not. A Whiskey and Stone's ginger wine never goes a miss either. Very rarely drink spirits in the pub but work colleagues imbibe a lot of vodka so I often go with the flow. If I'm in a restaurant it's usually wine to go with whatever we're having but I'm certainly no snob. Don't know enough about the subject to even attempt to be. A good few years back we used have regular get togethers at home with about a dozen friends, lots of good music and Vodka Martinis strong enough to cause the temporary loss of the power of speech were the order of the day.  Never experienced hangovers like it. You may have realised by now that I do like the odd drink but funnily enough I almost never drink at home alone - watching the TV or reading a book or whatever. A perfectly harmless pastime of course in moderation but I don't enjoy it.  Think it would get me a bad way. At best two sips of something and I just want to get out down to the pub to socialise – at worse a bleak, maudlin evening would ensue.

Re: What's Your Tipple?

I grew up in a 'macho' environment: we were getting served at 13.  I got into more fights at 15 than I care to remember.  I would just as soon wear a Burberry baseball cap as venture into a pub filled with overexcited male drinkers.  Cafe culture is much more my thing these days.  Not necessarily Italian places - sausage, chips and thick toast joints, too.  My daughter, who is 21, has a similar aversion to alcohol.  Her fiancee has never touched a drop.  I like the idea that the Italians have no word in their language for 'hangover'.  It must sound puritanical, but the memories of blood and puke have never left me.

Re: What's Your Tipple?

It's summer, so during the day it's a Gin and Tonic.  After dark, bourbon.  Neat (currently working on a bottle of Four Roses single).  Out and about, I'll order a Manhattan.

Re: What's Your Tipple?

Guzzling my way through Sally Berk's excellent Martini book at the moment, early-evening cocktail for early-evening cocktail. Monday an Absolute Martini, yesterday a Barnum. Not too sure what today has in store. Cosmopolitan?

Re: What's Your Tipple?

Ales in proper pubs (often in a backstreet or off the beaten track).

I have given up wine. I know the various tastes but found I was not getting that much pleasure from wine. Buying it by the case was silly. It helps moderate my alcohol intake as well.

I used to drink whisky, port,  sherry in the Winter but I am cutting down on that as well.

Beer is the complete antidote to fashion.

The Great British Beer Festival is currently on at Earls Court - http://gbbf.camra.org.uk/home  . It will be stewarded by enormous bearded men in orange tee shirts. Some of them will have pewter tankards hanging from their belts like gunslingers in the Wild West. It would be a great place to take a five year old. You could tell them 'This is what will happen to you if you get too fond of beer!'

Anyway, I was in the pub last night (till one in the morning). We decided we would not go to Earls Court. I was bored with it. Furthermore it was £10 on the door to get in, plus £3 for a glass to drink out of, plus £2 for a programme. £15 plus fares before a drop has even touched your lips.

Re: What's Your Tipple?

Skipped 'C' in the Martini book yesterday and went straight to 'D' for Danish Martini - Aalborg Taffel Akvavit straight from the deep freeze, shaken with a bit of vermouth. Big green Greek olive filled with almond as a garnish.

Laophroaig this evening, no ice or water (like the fella in 'The Quiet Man' says:

"When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey. When I drink water, I drink water."

OR

Vodka martini with a lemon twist. A few of those and I'm under the barmaid. In fact, I remember dragging a barmaid out from behind the bar for a dance once in my younger days...Ah, youth.
