Why this excitement about suedeheads?

I was one: junior style.  I'd be 12 going on 13, and into Slade, Bowie and Roxy Music.  We wore the most horrendous clothes you can imagine: stripy tank tops, orange shirts with massive collars, itchy Oxford bags with turn-ups, clumpy tasselled loafers and the ubiquitous Doc Marten.  Whatever Mr. Hewitt claims, it had as much to do with Ivy style - outside London anyway - as OAPs wearing shell suits.  In fact, it was just about the opposite - anti-style - and some of my mates then 'discovered' Northern Soul and the gear grew ever more hideous.

It was the early 70s.  There was nothing much worthwhile, believe me.

Re: Why this excitement about suedeheads?

Slightly unfair to filter an era solely through personal experiences, but eminently understandable.

It must be said that there were exponents of this style who exuded a sharp cool quite unlike the horrendous clothes you mention above. One thinks of the vanguard of the Northern Soul scene with its Barathea blazers with lapped seams; plaintoe, double-soled shoes; Shetlands and flannels and it's impossible not to think that this could be a very good look.

Is it possible that you simply weren't into clothes that much? I talk to older lads from Skipton, Keighley and other small Northern towns regularly who have nothing but positive and crystal-clear memories of their clothing at that particular time. One said to me recently that he'd give anything to resurrect a particular mushy-pea coloured Shetland crewneck from 1971. But they were very much an in-crowd on a highly secretive scene. By the time Wigan had opened its doors it was, according to those whose opinions I respect, "all over already". When the mass media happened on the cult (centering predictably on the drug-fuelled revelry aspect) it was already trying hard to recapture the magic which had accompanied its birth. Great records would still be found and a good time had by all, but it is probably impossible to fully summon the esoteric magic of the early Northern Soul scene.

"All over already".  Yes, I'd say so.  I've read about the blazers and flannels etc. you mention and it sounds like a Look all of its own, far removed from the star jumpers and huge baggies I remember.
I was into clothes to the extent my Mam would allow me to be (the term 'control freak' hadn't been coined in 1972, NSB, but you'll get the picture).  We were kiddies, you know!

Re: Why this excitement about suedeheads?

I have been trying to spend less time on here but ever now and then a post pop up that get me back.

A few months ago, I had posted a link to someone who has put picture on Soul Source his and his friends days from Mod to Suedehead.
The picture are (if not somewhat blurred in some case) a great look at the detail of the clothes.

I was thinking thought are the later picture suedeheads or a group of like-minded people who where Mods trying to stay smart but away from the crowd?

Ps, The picture links on SS are not working so I’ll try and get them back on there (if you wish)

Alex, I’m looking forward to your essay.

I’ve gone over all the spelling in word (just hope it still make sense smile

Re: Why this excitement about suedeheads?

I remember:

The market stall crombie (exposed red hanky)
The Budgie jacket (horrifying)
The loafers (always tasselled, most often basket weave)
The socks (not only red but also orange and lime green or orange with black bands)
The brogues (strictly for kicking rival Girls Ball games fans)
The brollies (I till bear the scar above my left eye)

Just in case people aren't familiar with it here's a link that'd be of interest anyway :

Re: Why this excitement about suedeheads?

Six degrees of seperation?  Professor Kelp's right, I think, about a 'generic way of dressing', and that means the hardcore Ivyist very often having to go out of his way to give subtle twists to an overall 'look'.  Common ground, however, is found in cleanliness (at least, it should be) - remember Elms' insistence upon it?  I found myself in close proximity to some crusty creature in Oxfam the other day who stank to high heaven.  I found myself almost gagging, having gone through my early morning routine of shower, shave, aftershave, deodorant etc.  A fresh haircut is essential - a crew cut more or less.  The 'Wiki' entry amuses me, linking the cut during the 1950s and 1960s to a man of conservative political opinion.  That's me all right.
Where I live, though, the only soul fans are local businessmen, the rest being mostly chavs and hip-hoppers, skaters or Goths.  Nary a 'mod' in sight, much less some freak in horn rimmed specs and a sack jacket, trousers cut too high and big shoes, looking like Barry Goldwater.

Re: Why this excitement about suedeheads?

Can't remember if we ever did a thread on Ivy grooming, but it was something we used to talk about a lot BTS.

Haircuts, sideburn length & shape, Boston or 'Fade' at the nape of the neck, the shave, the over-all importance of a polished, groomed appearence right down you your fingernails - Truly the 'clean-cut' look that people used to talk about in the Boom Years.

Being 'College Boy smart' often crops up too along with the adjective 'Smooth' when talking about the College Boy HairCrop.

Maybe we should get a thread going on all this as it is right at the heart of The Look?

Best -
