Re: Brass tacks

One of our BTS number above has been unmasked: Roger from Barnes. And so a plug for the Bull is coming up:

Re: Brass tacks

'Happy Days'.  'Grease'.  'Crap like that'.

It raises a more than interesting point.

I recall Ken Lovegrove asking me if I like 'American Graffiti'.  I do, but not as much as I like 'The Last Picture Show'.  One is fun, the other reflective (OK, I know I'm simplifying here).  There we are:  KL represents that deep interest in American rock n'roll, automobiles and suchlike that many of us, to some degree or another, share.  Personally, I'm interested in Elvis as a post-war American icon in the same way that I'm interested in Sinatra as a pre-war icon.  Winkler and Travolta pissed all over this is far as I'm concerned, so that any consideration of 'Americana' in terms of clothing has to be very careful.  A younger man will get away with a good quality collegiate warm-up, particularly if it has some authentic history behind it, so long as his hair is right and he does not fall into the trap of looking like - for want of a better word - a 'rockabilly'.  (Not a good example:  English rockabillies have an interesting style of their own).  Anyway, he has to avoid pastiche.  Pastiche sucks - like 'ironic' sucks.  There's another very fine line here.  White FOTL t-shirt, Pendleton (or even 'Sir Guy', if you can get hold of one), wool and leather warm-up, denims or chinos (preferably the latter) and maybe dirty bucks would be a good look up until a certain age.  Beyond that...  no...

You'll still find 'Americana' at J.Simons.  My guess is that none of the staff wear it.  They're far too stripped down.

Re: Brass tacks

I believe The Bull had problems with residents in new built flats nearby who objected to the noise. That is what you get if you move next to a pub.

Not my manor or a pub I frequent but we are blessed with many fine pubs in SW London.

Is that a photo of Paul Newman up at the back on the left hand side?

Re: Brass tacks

Wonderful that that article should be on the forum, for all to enjoy.  I've managed to get hold of two ancient Lion of Troy shirts over the past couple of years, and still have one half-sleeved number that requires little or no ironing (my wife irons it anyway).  They did a nice advert for Egyptian broadcloth, often found for sale on Ebay and very handsome in a frame.

Re: Brass tacks

What, you mean he actually sat on that chair?  That chair?  That actual chair?  Kevin Kavanagh?  And his fans sniffed the cushion?  (Dark visions of Strachan visiting the loo, slice of pizza in one hand, wank mag in the other)...

See that door at the end of the shop...

Not many of us have been through there, eh, GG?

I got kebab sauce on me chinos behind there once...

Re: Brass tacks

When l first opened the topic l thought it would be about brass tacks used on shoo heels. l was ready for some `brass tack porn', but unfortunately none.    sad
