collecting

any bibliophiles/collectors on this forum? I have recently turned my hand to collecting first impression/edition books.
It's Mainly ones I have had as paperbacks or are favorite books.
I find I have a very visual relationship to the period dust jackets and bindings so much as the literature inside them.
Its the same relationship I have to collecting records ie sleeve/ label design.  labells like sue ,chess,
atlantic, impulse.
this all happened by chance as I was passing my local 2nd hand bookshop and went in and found A colin macinnes novel. I bought it and before I know it, am seeking out other books and have amassed a small but growing collection.
recently found books include;
absolute beginners
ipcress file
look back in anger. nothing obscure just modern classics.

so does any one else find obsessive collecting attention to detail in other things apart from the obvious clothes shoes? I ask this because its now starting to creep into other aspects of life as banal as crockery and home ware. regards nv

Re: collecting

^ Hello NV. I think you'll find a lot of obsessives on this message board! Bibliophile? Yes, that me. Collector of records, art, crockery and homeware? Yes, me too. Picked up the bug in art college. Economic reality kicking in over the past few years has seriously curtailed my gratuitous spending on such things but I'm still there. It's an addiction.

That made me belly laugh cheeky monkey .porn eh?
with regards to the namesake 'nouvelle vague' its in reference to the french period of filmmaking/directors,
rather than the band. although I believe thats also their Raison d'être.

Re: collecting

I collect first editions of Black Sparrow Press. Also a definitive library of Beat writers and currently collecting Japanese imports of Contemporary and Pacific Jazz CD reissues.  Once you get locked into that mode, you must have everything, you must have it all!

Same with single malt whisky.  Sadly, my wife threw all my out last week, as I had an appendicitis scare which she puts down to the evils of drink, generally Guinness + the finest aged whisky I can get. Probably, more likely my drinking of 10+ coffees a day.  Now I'm on medication, off the booze (for a while) and bored as hell.  And not exquisitely bored as Townsend might say, more like the Iggy Pop version.

^No indeed, father Jack, or the face of Bukowski. His last girlfriend was quite good looking though.

Black Sparrow Press was originally set up to publish Bukowski, but there's loads of good books, Wydham Lewis, William Everson and some great poetry, including a homage to Lester Young by David Metzler.

If I had the money I would collect vintage cars!

My favourite American car is the 1961 Lincoln Continental, designed by Elwood Engel.
