Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

i returned two jtg items last week (a gingham s/s shirt and staprest trousers), but i wish things turned out differently. while the shirts are slim fit, i don't think they'd fit most skinny people. i would have to pump a lot of iron to fill out the shoulders and chest; the collar and bottom fit without any room to spare. the fabric and sewing were pretty nice, though. as for the trousers, they are made with a stiff fabric that looks very wrinkly in the back. not sharp.

But Darling I thought you were. I'm sure you've said as much. I wouldn't offend you for the world.
Being a satire is a pretty good thing to be anyway. I've got no beef with you, your input on Miss Porter's the other day was excellent.
Now I come to think of it there was endless speculation as to who you were when you first rolled up too...

Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

It's always fascinated me how quickly accusations of either sexual inadequacy (HBH suggesting my cynicism about 'mod girls' is born purely from my lack of appeal to them) or homosexuality (Kingstonian suggesting I am advocating 'poof Ivy'...) arise when rejecting female input and influence. Boys boys boys - we all know that the butchest amongst us are those comfortable with the feminine expression of our identity - and we all lay ourselves open to accusations of effeminacy with our love of dress. Face up chaps to your inner lady. Here's the test : The Seven Year Itch, the scene where Marilyn's skirt is blown up by the draft from the subway : Where are your eyes going? Her legs, or Tom Ewell's penny loafers?

Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

Oh I fell pretty heavily for my first pair of Weejuns - really heavily. Black pennys. Shiny. Amazing smell. Made in Wilton Maine. They filled my mind for weeks afterwards. I just wish I'd bought them from one of the great shops but I bought them from a surly Mancunian estabishment called Aspecto. I'm still trying to recreate that buzz which I why the Alden purchase will be such a big deal for me. Some 44 year old men buy a bright red sports car, others leave their wives and run off with a young blonde. I meanwhile yearn for a humble little slip-on shoe made from horse hide. Sometimes I think there's almost an organic/eco angle to all this : you know, clothes made to last not to be thrown away, recycling old stuff via friends/ebay, recyclable natural materials. Perhaps it's the most political 'mod' has ever got, even if purely accidentally.

I thought that by Prison you meant 'regulation', standard issue, self-limiting Ivy.

It's a 'rules' thing!

Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

Oh, and as regards the rest of this thread, JTG is of no interest to me (reminds me too much of The Cavern and Melandi - awful 80s Mod clothing outlets that I was unfortunate enough to patronise in my youth); but it's great to see female ivy wearers in general and on this forum in particular . . . respect to ivy girl.

Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

personally I love JtG shirts, even the polyester ones

fit for me is spot on, has room in the shoulders but tapers in nicely thru the torso.  Sleeve length on l/s is spot on for my height as well.  I think I have about 15 of their shirts now, and while the quality isnt top notch, it's definitely holds up to much wear and wash.  Really good value imo, but to each his own

Also their staprest fit like I was their fit model so I'd recommend those as well, but I know many complain about not being able to fit in them.

Adam/Jon at the shop are good guys and I'm all for supporting small ventures like theirs

The title of this forum is 'Talk IVY' old chap, not 'Talk POLYESTER'.

Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

It's a boring detail but the Ben Sherman shirt is based on the Tru-Val 'Career Club' OCBD.

Or so the story goes...

Re: Jump The Gun in Brighton

at the end of the day, JtG sells clothes that can be modeled to be very Ivy style if one wanted.  I dont know if they are directly aware of the Ivy influences that created the style they are referencing but I'd much rather see stores like JtG that, knowingly or not, can be a good foot in the door for someone to get dressed smart and clean, and maybe when the subculture shackles get loosened that person who shops at JtG will expand his repertoire and actually seek out "ivy league" style in a more learned way.
