Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Just joined & a bit of an ivy novice - so go easy on me!

Found some American made tweed jackets on this site
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MENS-VINTAGE-HARRIS-TWEED-JACKET-42-S-GREY-BLUE-HERRINGBONE-STRIPED-/181090381908?pt=UK_Men_s_Suits_Tailoring&hash=item2a29d3f054
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MENS-HARRIS-TWEED-JACKET-42-R-BEIGE-BROWN-/181091112719?pt=UK_Men_s_Suits_Tailoring&hash=item2a29df170f
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MENS-HARRIS-TWEED-JACKET-44-R-BROWN-BEIGE-/171030396948?pt=UK_Men_s_Suits_Tailoring&hash=item27d234c014

Picked this one up from the site for £50 & it arrived yesterday
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171010766694?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649
it's great!

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

That looks like overpriced '70s Anglo stuff to me... 2 button, flared lapels, darted and waisted fronts with stiff as board shoulders from what's seen in the links above.

Hello Dogtooth,

There are a few features missing there like Oli said. Id pick up a copy of The Ivy Look to help you learn some of the details that make the ivy league style sack jacket

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Mine was definitely American - maybe from the 70s - I've tried to work it out from the union tag on the jacket I've got.

Came from Merritt Schaefer and Brown - a department store in Austin, Texas
http://www.thesocietydiaries.com/2011/09/vintage-shopping/

A lot of the labels on the jackets do show they're from the USA

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Welcome dogtooth i am no expert but IMO the details are missing from those jackets.
Stick around though Bud,because this place is about sharing ideas and learning.
Just because something is US made it does not make it Ivy.
If you like it though then thats great.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

As tweed goes, those ain't stiff as boards anglo suit of armour shoulders. But they ain't natural either.

Definitely 70's and not really Ivy. Sorry Dogtooth. Stick around and you'll get your eye in.

If it's any consolation the last one which you actually bought looks like an Ivyish silhouette with non Ivy style details.

Not for many here.  The sort of thing OCBD is brave enough to wear...

But looking at it again, it looks similar to what J Press flogs now....

Well, you live & learn...

I was excited by the fabric as much as anything - and it does look good on me!

Feel free to post a picture on the Ivy League Style for Today thread.

... and don't be put off by this lot. They've posted plenty of un-Ivy stuff in the past too.

Welcome to the forum. It's all down hill from here mate.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

... not that the jacket you bought is totally un-Ivy. Actually I'd say it's more Ivy than not.

What's the shoulder like on you? Does it conform to the natural line of your shoulder?

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Thanks for the advice Liam...and the welcome
I think I know you from another forum, were you the lad who had a really good chat with Claudio the other day?

I don't want to hang around on this thread discussing style details - but yes, shoulders are natural & unpadded, unlike other jackets I've got.
I think I'll take myself over to the style for today... (I'll get me coat!)

Yeah Acton - I liked that jacket too

The trouble I find with Ivy is there is not enough lace.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

Exactly.  The jacket is clearly of US style, so comparisons to Jack Regan (who always wore British gear) are misinformed.

Dirty Harry did sport a sack tweed in the 1st movie, btw, however I think he also wore a non-sack tweed (and his shirts and ties were not kosher ivy).

Bullitt's tweed is certainly marred by the side vents.  I'm not an elbow patches fan either.  The film's tedious too, despite being quite stylish.

Re: Ebay / Etsy alert

I watched the Sweeney yesterday, and as a casual, (and humorous) observation to me they look similar. To the pedant they're clearly not.

Sorry to be pendantic but did you mean 'pedant'?
