Re: Labels?

I now suspect that, in reality, 1983 above also had
ALL COTTON
MACHINE WASH HOT

below the logo, but the artist couldn't be bothered to show 2 lines of writing.

Re: Labels?

The examples Michael has shown are not 60's Brooks.  Not trying to be combative, just factual.  60's shirts will only say ALL COTTON (because of the Textile Fibre Products Identification Act). No breast pocket until '65, I believe.  Prior to the TFPIA, and prior to Brooks' expansion beyond NYC, shirts had NEW YORK on the label and MAKERS inside the oval with the size.  In '71, the Federal Trade Commission added care instructions.  NO CHLORINE BLEACH is at least after '82.

Re: Labels?

^By the way who bought the 1950s Brooks Brothers popover you had for sale? I was tempted, but 33 arm is too short for me. Was it someone we know, a Japanese, a museum, a fashion house?

Just curious.

Re: Labels?

You probably know this (re: color of labels) but blue was a Brooksgate (I think) for a while and green was a wash-and-wear shirt.  A full history of the labels and how they changed would be interesting.  I've got stuff in storage going back a while.  Suits and things like that.  Very few shirts.  Maybe one or two oldies that were "passed down" from Sainted this or that.

Tie labels are another thing to consider.  The old Makers label changed several times.  I've seen about 4 incarnations that come to mind but there are probably more.

That said, I've always thought ties the least interesting thing to wear.  I don't know if I really want (or need or wear) more than a dozen.  Just because there are a few solids and stripes and dots that I consistently reach for.

Re: Labels?

For Brooks:

White on Black: pre-50s through early 70s.
Yellow on blue: mid 1970s-1990s.

For shirts, if it just says "All cotton" only its 50s/60s. If it says "all cotton machine wash hot" it's 70s-early 80s.

Re: Labels?

A nice flow chart for shirt ID would be good. Maybe all you clever clogs could get together and thrash it out?

In what year(s) was Brooks selling its oxfords for $29.50?

Re: Labels?

Was the cut of a Brooks oxford in, say, '75, the same as one in '65?

^^^ I have a couple of vintage NOS / NWT BB shirts that I can do a price check on when I get back to Boston.
