I have fallen completely out of love with the standard hard worsted wool suit, that all-season staple. I like cotton suits when it's hot and tweed suits when it's cold. Hanker for a corduroy number. Love the flannel.
But the everyday smooth wool suit doesn't do much for me. too boardroom, commuter, salesman on a plane, I dunno. It's a suit that says "office work," which is not so inspiring.
Of course, a good episode of Mad Men finds me eating my words, but the prejudice stands.
Anyone with me? Who strongly prefers suits unsuitable for business?
I'm absolutely with you. I currently own only 2 worsted suits but own several corduroys, flannels, cotton, and tweed.
While I enjoy the cottons and tweeds and flannels no end, there's still nothing like hard worsted to say, "I wield good, old-fashioned, capitalist-hegemonic power." Puts a spring in my step.

I enjoy the clash of worsted with my unruly mouth in the business environment. People find it upsetting.
We really look down on Doctors too, if that sweetens the pill for you.
I think that "The Professions" (as we call them over here) are sneered at because they constitute a 'buffer' class and we always hate those.
The idea that by personal achievement one can raise oneself in the pecking order is most un-English.
The Lower Middle Class get it in the neck in the same way when they become Lower Middle Class. However, if they stay Upper Working Class then we love them.
To add to the hate list in England are the clergy. Never trusted & always ones to dodge. Often they want money from you...
The coves!
Trouble in England is that the Uppers hate you for being uppity & the Lowers hate you for your 'Uncle Tom'-ness when you're caught between the two of them.
Best to stay at home in your pants & vest watching cable.
I'm worsteding today. I don't feel like taking any crap, and it helps.
I worsteded earlier & the thought occurs that becasue I did it in an Ivy cut (Vintage Press) I dodged the implications of the fabric by doing it in an alien cut.
It looked straight... but loose.
You have a good eye, my friend.
Given all these options I remain quite happy with my membership of the Button-Down Club (Westside).

Russ, what do Brits think of those with cushy, made-up jobs, like "writer and researcher for media studies institution"?
... I used to pretend to be sexually disfunctional to pull women. Have you ever done that too?
I've never pretended to be Gay (a common trick), but being a little bit 'troubled' always used to work well for me.
It's the best way to get the girl on top for the first time.
maybe.
AQG - If that is Mrs. AQG, my respect for you has increased 10 fold.
To Brownshoe's original point, I do like mixing in non-worsteds when I can. I will wear them to the office when I don't have client meetings. I will save the worsteds for days on which I have meetings.
Worsteds can be dressed down with an OCBD and silk knit.
