Re: Shirts and Softness

Now are you being ironic there NSB mate?, because I struggle a little with your fabulous sense of humour. Have you ever considered professional comedy writing? You are a hoot... Mate!

Re: Shirts and Softness

Beatnik

This entire forum seems a bit of a struggle for you. Perhaps you should worry less about people 'getting you' or about whether it's becoming a bit dull. It's possibly a case of certain postings antagonising you because there's little commonality between you and many of the preoccupations of others here.

It's primarily a forum centering around what is broadly called 'Ivy League' clothing and if that's not for you it might be easier if you choose to look elsewhere for your daily ego massage. Maybe start your own forum for provincial advertising executives?

I'm trying to be constructive because I don't think it's particularly healthy for this place to descend into an arena for bickering or the airing of grievances which don't appear to arise from events in the real world. I've never met you and you know nothing of my life yet you appear to find it easy to label me "small, dull and petty". I am actually a generous, open-minded and light individual. I like clothes and enjoy chatting about them with people who may enjoy the same sliver of esoterica in a rapidly changing world. It strikes me as odd that you would want to waste your own time in attacking people for liking the particular in a place dedicated primarily to that very thing.

I've enjoyed a great deal of your input and I think it can be valuable to have someone here who offers a perspective from 'outside' as it were as a check on myopia. But perhaps the time has come for you to seek a wider perspective about your own motivation in continuing to post here.

Re: Shirts and Softness

I don't think it's a post about belonging; I think it's about attitudes once one has made the decision to be here. I'd be interested to know if the forum has influenced Beatnik in his clothing choices since being here. If it has then that's great. I've found much of the content here helpful and thought-provoking. I'd never think there is no more to learn. Similarly I'd like to think that if someone has a query which I can answer then it's great to help out.

The Beatnik makes much of his soi-disant status as a freewheeling outsider. At first the schtick had a certain charm but now his pose strikes me as dubious and unhealthy. When that personality descends into one capable of chucking personal insults around with abandon then it makes me question if I'd rather spend my online time in a more fulfilling manner. I don't want to enter into slanging matches with someone who by his own admission clearly relishes the role of provocateur.

Nicely put NSB. You have certainly got a handle on me. I like that 'freewheeling outsider' bit. Not so keen on 'dubious and unhealthy' though.

I imagine if you spent an evening with Hemmingway, Behan, Dali, Joyce, Dylan Thomas, Picasso there would be no chucking personal insults around with abandon. No, I'm sure it would be a quiet affair, with conversation turning to how to get your whites cleaner.
Not as though I label myself a genius in their mould, but sometimes a little bit of ribaldery brings out the best in people. Look at what it did for you here. Those posts were masterful. I feel downright guilty now.
The 'don't call me mate' comment was dull, small and petty though i'm afraid.

Exactly Uncle.
Thought i'd liven things up a bit today. It's strange how people have reacted. Some enjoyed it all and joined in. Some got sadly, rather upset. I think it says quite a bit about individuals who post on here. Some snap it and others crap it... (With thanks to B.R.)

Re: Shirts and Softness

Once upon a time in Paris Hartford flooded Le Bon Marche with wonderful Blue/White striped jobs - Multi-stripes, Pyjama stripes, Track stripes, etc. Three racks of nothing but Blue/White.

Lovely, softly made kit.

Soft Shirt Brigade, I do like that. We'll have to decide on some regimentals. Shiny elbows will be a must, nothing too fresh.

The sueded poplin is a nice find. I never do think to look at "sport shirts." It always seemed like a foolish distinction to me.

I will try 5 washed with 2 onions.

Re: Shirts and Softness

There must be an optimum onion to shirt ratio...

Or some kind of equation...

SS = O/S2 X T ?

(Soft Shirt equals Onion divided by two Shirts multiplied by Time?)

These are back in the sale section on the UK/Europe site again (#369663). The navy plaid looks particularly nice.

Actually. In all seriousness, I really did like the 'oven baked crepe'.
Was that wizard wheeze true?
Or is it just a way of getting me to set fire to my Giant vibrator?
