THis is a sad thing, whether one shops there or not. These types of 'traditiona American style' shops are getting thin on the ground.

It's so sad, especially as I've only just now been able to visit it.
I was in there today & after looking around for a bit John came over to me with a 60's USA made tweed jacket that he thought would fit. It had slim lapels, natural shoulder, raised seam, hooked vent etc etc. It needed a clean and some buttons but needless to say i'm now wearing it as i type.
Talk about customer service though, the three times I've been in I've had nothing but help, advice, suggestions etc. He also gave me the number of a hairdresser!
It's now definitely my favourite shop in the world and i only have until February to frequent it. Sad times....

I popped in today and picked up a pair of John's chinos, had a quick natter with JS and then on to the Bar Italia for an afternoon chat over coffee with GG.
Beatnik, I didn't spot any Playboys, but the Sanders chukkas were in the window in brown or black.

In fairness Gibbo is a good guy and I respect his opinions and wisdom a great deal.
It's just a bit of fun to picture him as a bad tempered old curmudgon, bursting kids' footballs that come over the fence, and shouting "I fought in the Ivy wars for you!".
Actually he's younger than me...

Forgive my pedantry but was it not number 10? Tel : 01 940 9379. Number 9 a v.dodgy pizza place I think. Mighty powerful lay lines in that part of the world, L'Auberge meets Truffaut at the Odeon next door meets JS and JK setting out on the adventure that changed many of our lives. I still love Richmond despite its current manifestation as sub-rugby shirted, fat-arsed public school shits sitting in £2M villas in anonymous streets off the Hill. Psychogeography - sometimes I can almost believe in it. People, history and events live on after they exist. Richmond still to me should be blue plaqued as one of the great UK Modernist Heartlands.

Could well be .. memory isn't what it used to be, but I deifinitely remember the phone number was 940 9378 .... Touche.
The Cheese Burgers that they sold in l'Auberge were fantastic, not great for the cholestrol but didn't worry about that in those days ... and then there was the Italian over the road, run by Tony I think, it was the place of choice for saturday lunchtime Spaghetti Bolognaise.

We will soon be doing a pub crawl to Isleworth, starting at the Victoria just up from the Ivy Shop. What sort of a pub is it ? I've never been in there.
Waterman's I like and some on the Green. The big one on the bridge is OK. Orange Tree has gone downhill. Sun Inn is too rugby. The one along the Petersham Road used to be a destination pub in 1970s when real ale started being appreciated again.

Havn't been in the Victoria for a long time but its an old traditional pub and only so small you expect they couldn't cock it up ... another small pub is the Angel and Crown just off George St in the alley next to WH Smith ... band The Old Ship does a decent pint even if the decor has been modernised.
