Coffee at The Ivy Shop -

We used to have our coffee first thing, after the hoovering & the shoe polishing. Just the one cup. Although, to be accurate, we drank it out of mugs, not cups...

First John or Ian would unlock the door & then we'd take the iron window grills down & through to the place out the back of the shop. Then the door was locked up again.

We'd get the shop ready & have our coffee and then unlock the door again for the punters after a chat and a bit of a wind down after making it in & up the hill.

I used to lean by the Tattersalls up at the far end of the shoe table. Ian had his table & chair to my left across the way. The other Saturday boy (long hair) would stay near the back door pretty much & Mr. Lally would be front of house in a sort of MC role at the other end of the shoe table from me.

22 years ago, but I can still remember well that we drank coffee and not tea in The Ivy.

It was a coffee kinda place.

Yes... That was wrong of me.

Kinda funny though, in a twisted way.

Maybe.

What do you want to see here, Sir?

Ignore the Beatnik - he's got no soul. I love this stuff Russell. The Ivy Shop and John's have shaped our worlds. Their place in our lives is a profound one. One cannot praise them enough. This is British cultural microhistory - important stuff. Read and learn Beatnik.

I don't get this tough love. Actually, I quite enjoy reading stories about the shop(s) for what they are - anecdotes, not sermons. Just don't read them if you don't like them, it's that easy.

Because you have a different point of view to thee Mighty Gibson therefore you have 'no soul'. That's very wise and understanding of you Pope Gibbo.
I bet you're a joy to meet in the flesh.
Understand this... Only you and Jim dig this tedious JS shit. Expand your mind away from that shitty little shop, there's a big world out there and guess what... it's not flat your Holiness .

Re: Coffee at The Ivy Shop -

If I had as much time on my hands as you appear to have Jim, I would turn this forum around. The content, the design, advertising, it's marketing. That's what I do for a living. But that living sadly demands too much of my time. When I do get a spare moment I used to like to come this forum to be informed and entertained. That is not happening now under you Jim. You appear to have run out of ideas. Threads about the fuckin JS shop. Is that all you got. Use some creativity man.
Plus Mike, may I suggest you try one of the many English grammar internet sites please. Don't sword fence with Zorro until you have sharpened your rapier a bit old fruit...

Yes, of course this is FNB's place, but you are the custodian. You know you could do so much more with this forum if you put your mind to it.You are it's driving force and you are driving it into a creative cul de sac.

Please use the phone to discuss polishing activities with Pope Gibbo. My poor heart couldn't take much more of the thrills and spills of the crazy world of JS long gone...

I thought my bitchin is the most interesting thing on here. At least Russy didn't have to make me up to stir things up a bit. I'm the real deal baby.
But honestly Mike... 'Eats, shoots and leaves' is a great book to get you started...

Re: Coffee at The Ivy Shop -

Okay.  I can see this from both sides.  Frankly, I like knowing all the little bits and pieces about what went on.

However.  Kingstonian is a tea-drinker.

Gibson Gardens, Jimmy and I more coffee men.

Let's not let it matter too much, and, if the forum does wind up in a cul-de-sac, FNB may well decide to act.

Bump.  Just to encourage more anecdotal evidence, particularly from Gibson Gardens.

Re: Coffee at The Ivy Shop -

Coffee is the Ivy drink, no two ways about it.  However, just to keep a check on myself, I drink tea with two sugars from my Elvis mug about once a week.  This is in honour of A. Kingstonian  B. Kenny Lovegrove.

Thanks for putting this thread back up Mister Panic. It reminds me what a wanker I was (am).
I apologise to all concerned.
